I recently read an article talking about how Seoul has much higher than normal noise pollution, and certainly after living in Korea a while it's been increasing every year. If i knew who my local representative was i'd send them a letter telling them it's getting out of hand...i mean it could be even little things that would make a big difference such as banning those trucks going around blaring their loudspeakers and bullhorns. Thoughts? |

Even if they did ban those trucks or traveling norebang advertisements, it would still go on because of the culture. It would be great if they could stop it from happening after a certain time though. My favorite noise polluters are those guys that scream at midnight down the street about the rice cake they are selling. |

They'll get on the banana trucks right after they close down the double pole barbershops (illegal) the red light districts (illegal) and those crazy-azz mofos driving on the sidewalks.
Just deal with it OP. It sucks, but it's Korea. Get some earplugs or something. |

I have one of those banana trucks with a speaker system stopping in front my apartment every Sunday morning... anyway, I heard they made it illegal to yell in the supermarkets in some part of China. When I visited China I found everything louder than in Korea except for the supermarkets which had no yelling staff telling me about the cheap samgyupsal prices. |

Noise pollution sucks *beep*; I value peace and quiet. I do okay here except for traffic and noisy neighbors, but that's a part of living in an apartment in a major city. The trucks with loud speakers is one thing I can't stand. I really hate whenever there's an election for any official at the smallest level of government, I have trucks blasting their speakers outside my apartment day in and day out. While I can get behind reducing noise pollution at the expense of politicians, it'll be just another law the police will fail to enforce. They're not stopping cars from hitting pedestrians on sidewalks, what makes you think they'll give a damn about noise?
Another thing is the speakers inside my apartment. I don't think its a bad idea for emergencies, but there are rarely emergencies, and the speakers end up being used to advertise products being sold outside the apartment. I don't like having advertisements invade my home without my consent and without warning. |

Wow! That's pretty over the top. There would be merry hell to pay if that were my house. I'm brutal when it comes to speakers. When i moved into my new office the first thing I did was disconnect the speaker for the bell which was set for the same level as outside. So, it blasted out the tune at the same level, inside a one room sized office, as it would outside. It had probably been like that for years and the past inhabitants of the office had been to scared to do anything about it.
Still, i can't believe this situation. It's like 1984 stuff. |

I find that once you get off the main road, the noise drops significantly. I used to live in the downtown core of a 1 million pop city on the 22nd floor.
in the winter when you kept the windows closed to stay warm, it was pretty quiet except for motorbikes, sirens and light rail transit, and the occasional idiot screaming off their balcony.
In the summer it was pretty bad. no air con so windows always open. Even 22 floors up you could hear skateboarders, people talking loudly, etc.
I could compare the place I'm at now to there. I'm closer to the road as I'm only on the second floor, but not right beside the road, I'm a row of buildings back. is it noisier? not really.. unless I'm sitting here with everything off and the windows wide open. Traffic is comparable, the sirens are quieter in korea, and the subway goes underground here.
not many skateboarders. The odd person screaming, but I'd say its less. There I had to contend with the proximity of bars and frat boys (or guys who still thought they were frat boys). There are no significant bars here, and at least around here I find the random screaming from young adults to be less than back home.
but if I'm going to the store and back up even another row of houses its very quiet. All these buildings close together create a nice sound barrier that eats up a lot of noise quickly. Doesn't do much for the blue trucks..but my street is too narrow for one of those.. if you want peace and quiet it is possible you just need to be very particular and plan out the location.
go back at least a couple rows from the main road, check the size of the road, look for nearby bars/noraebangs etc |

Lol I wouldn't go that far but yes it sucks. And yes, why didn't I think about disconnecting it? Silly me. Everybody time that thing went off I wished I had a shotgun to blast it off the wall but all I need is a screwdriver.
On a related note, if you go to the Yonsei Campus, there are speakers everywhere on campus playing the school radio station. Even in the park area on campus. The speakers are on the trees and constantly blasting during the day. I used to try to do my school work there because it looked peaceful and quiet because of all the trees and stuff, but I couldn't concentrate. The Korean students seem to just ignore it and do their reading there anyway. Maybe they thrive in a noisy environment. It is somewhat disturbing as it does remind me of a totalitarian society that has to constantly "remind" its people how awesome their country is and how happy they are. But it was mostly just crappy music instead of propaganda. Not sure if other schools are like this. |

I noticed a large plaza at Gangnam Finance Centre with a fountain so went there to read a book as I waited for my wife to finish her interview. The fountain will cover the street noise-brilliant. Go to sit down...is there a concert..?? They're playing piped, looped music. Grrr, I'll have a pint instead.
It's the same wine in a different bottle everywhere.
Youido Park-KPop.
Tranquil mountain retreat-KTrot.
Wife's aunts Trout restaurant out back of beyond-KEasyListening.
Go to the top of a mountain-they scream, buy a new phone-you turn the speaker up, you got a complaint-you shout, got some crappy product to sell-get a couple of slappers and stick the PA on.
Nothing a good flogging wouldn't fix |

You tend to learn to ignore the speakers after a while. It only took me a few weeks. Besides, it's not that blaringly loud, nor is it on 24/7 or even during all daylight hours. Take your iPod along or learn to buzz it out. Better yet, go to the library, it's only the biggest private/academic one in Korea
I'm not sure of other schools either, though I vaguely remember hearing stuff on the SNUT campus.. And Korea, too, though I've been to both campuses far too little to really say. |

Nah, I prefer things to be quiet rather than pretending it to be or drowning it out with a different noise. The Yonsei library isn't all that great either. The people studying at their desks are quiet but the people in the halls and lobby are really loud (just like Koreans anywhere) and the noise leaks into the quiet rooms.
Not that it matters anyway since I'm not a student anymore. If you're a student just do your reading in your dorm. It'll probably be more quiet due to all the students being at the library or out getting smashed. That's what I eventually ended up doing. |

I wish the fruit trucks with the loudspeakers were the biggest annoyance for me. I live in an apartment building adjacent to some late-night barbeque joints. Even though I'm on the 12th floor, I can hear what's going on in the street as if it was in the next room. On nights that it's cool enough not to use the AC, I sleep with the windows open. I hear at least one violent drunken fight per night- bottles breaking, women screaming, ajosshis in a drunken rage jump-kicking each other and wrestling around on the ground. The fights will continue for like 30 minutes at a time. Sometimes I just lie in bed listening to people wailing and fighting each other and think, "I am in hell. This is hell on earth." My husband sometimes calls the police, and they'll send someone over to drive by, maybe talk to to the guy for a couple of minutes, but they always drive away without doing anything- even when the drunk man runs after them shouting insults.
The other night I was jarred awake at 3am by the loudest, most irritating sound yet. It turned out that someone had parked behind a delivery truck, blocking him in, so he decided to lay on the horn and wake up the entire building until the man came down to move his car. He could have easily gone to the security personnel and asked them to phone the owner of the vehicle, but he chose to be a dick about it and wake up everyone. I finally screamed down at him to shut up and flipped him off. Not a smart reaction, I know, but it was three in the morning and I was still half asleep and very pissed off. Ajosshis here are inconsiderate and loud just because, as kings of their world, they can be. |

Several years ago I was sleeping in that 22nd floor apartment on a hot summer morning when I was awoken at about the same time by a god awful noise. It was like god was hammering his fist into the ground a million times a second. I woke up, went to the balcony and looked around. Down in the intersection some construction worker had jumped in some kind of big rig that had a giant jackhammer attached to the arm. He was wailing away on some giant pipe. Within the 1 block radius there were a lot of tall apartment buildings. I estimate around 5,000 people less than a couple hundred feet from there. All of them were on their balconies.
I called the cops and she could hear the noise and knew where I was. I said are you sending someone? Their response "Well he probably has a permit or something". I said "Well why don't you have someone swing by and check?" about 5 minutes later he stopped. It was insanity. I couldn't imagine a scenario in which some city planner would have thought it would be a good idiea to approve a permit for that. |
