Yeah.. so that's why you buy a wifi router for your home and use your internet signal. You can get one for 35,000 won and wham... use your touch/I-phone for internet all over your house.
Were you expecting not to pay for ANY internet and use your touch or I-phone as your primary internet device, even at home? That's not what it's meant for.
For as much as I use it, I am happy that I don't pay for yet another data plan. It's all free, and as I mentioned, I can find free wifi in 40% of the places I visit (or just walk around outside and find something free within a few hundred meters if I'm desperate). That means I can almost always grab my e-mail, update my news, or whatever, in between going from one place to another. Just do a little war-walking and you're gold.
For me, that's worth it not having to pay 20,000 to 60,000 per month extra (or whatever it is) for yet another data plan. You might be different, but I'm fine. |

FYI, I do have Wifi in my apartment. I'm the only one in my building with Wifi. If it wasn't secured with WPA2, there'd be like 100 people leaching off of it. I never said anything about using the iPhone as a main internet device. YOu can't even tether it in the US, why would it be available in Korea?

The point I was trying to make was that having Wifi doesn't undermine anything for "them". Wifi is spotty enough (you, yourself, mentioned 40% coverage) that the KT will have no problems pitching the Data Plans on potential iPhone buyers.
Lets just agree to disagree. To me, the convenience of having internet access anywhere in Korea (besides deep underground in the subway tunnels) is worth paying an extra 15,000w a month.
BETTER YET, the Iphone will hop off the 3G and jump on any free wifi available. So all the places you get free wifi, I get free wifi. I just have the added convenience of using the Data Plan during those times there is no hotspot. |

Most of the employees I know at Daum are not too happy about it. NONE of them are bragging about it. |

My point is that I have not seen any confirmation as to whether or not free wifi will be offered (or disabled) on these I-phones.
Haven't you read my posts?
If it is disabled, then the cost of using the phone network to surf is very expensive/a lot less convenient -- especially if you have to tip-toe around downloading anything other than basic text/small photos. |

The WIFI being disabled is mere speculation. It isn't disabled in any other country. What evidence is there to make you believe it will be disabled here? |

The Wifi is disabled in China. Also, many Korean Smartphones that have Wifi are disabled in Korea. For example, the LG Chocolate 2 phone has Wifi everywhere else except Korea.

If it were disabled in Korea, then you'd probably hear about it before it launched. China's iPhones with Disabled Wifi was reported in the media months before the phone was suppose to be launched.
You also got to figure that Apple can't sneeze without it being made headlines. If the Korean Iphone has disabled Wifi, I guarantee you will read about it on Google News as one of the headlines.
Since all the news sources are very quiet about the Iphone launch in Korea, you just have to assume there isn't anything out of the ordinary. |

| chinese iphones had wifi disabled because of a nationwide law banning wifi on mobile devices which has since been lifted, unfortunately after all of the phones were in production. presumably, wifi-enabled iphones will be sent into china in the near future. already, there are many 'entrepreneurial' chinese who have imported these wifi-enabled iphones and are selling them at a premium. korean telecoms have gotten away with cutting off wifi enabled devices until now, but with no law backing them, and the push behind the iphone, i doubt they could bring in wifi-disabled phones without taking a bath. |

| I'm pretty certain that you'll still be able to tap into your own or any unpassworded fools wifi and get regular internets without taxing your data limits. The idea that they'd disable it seems far fetched to me. I guess it's possible, but I definitely won't be buying one if they do |

i used to own an ipod touch 1st gen and thought the wifi sucked royal balls...painfully slow. plus i wanted to convert my tv/movies to be able to watch them while commuting but this was annoying too (1 episode of entorauge took over 1 hour to convert from avi and made my computer practically unusable while it converted).
have these 2 elements been improved on the iphone 3gs?
either way its good to see a phone that should shake up the smartphone segment here...charging 700-800k for a samsung spaztic phone is riDICKulous! |

The speed of the wifi depends on three things. The wifi network's connection to the internet, the amount of traffic that wifi network has at the moment, and the software speed of your iPod Touch. I'm assuming since you generalized that no matter what wifi network you connected to, it was always slow. I can explain this, but you won't like the explanation. Using internet on a computer is fast. Using internet on a mobile device is slower. It doesn't matter how fast the internet connection is. It's still a mobile device with less power than a computer. Web pages won't be instant.
Using AT&T's EDGE network (slower than 3G) in the U.S. was slow when browsing in Safari on my iPhone, but not a heck of a lot slower than WiFi. Where you'll really notice the difference is downloading or streaming to your iPhone/iPod Touch.
As for the video conversion, I don't see any Apple handheld device playing anything but mp4s for awhile. You'll just have to deal with the slow conversion. Yeah, it's an inconvenience, but you're not alone. This just depends on how powerful your computer is. A netbook? Sorry, it's going to take forever. A midrange laptop or desktop? Going to take awhile. A high end computer with at least 4GB of RAM and a quad core processor? It's going to be faster, but my pure guesstimate is that any consumer-level computer is always going to take at least 25 minutes to convert a 2 hour movie to a different video format. |

| There's an app for the Seoul subway that I find indispensable. You can get the free edition or pay $1.99 to have it calculate trip times for you. It's called KorSubway. |
