|
|
Hi guys
I have 2 job offers and I don't know which one to choose.
Offer 1- Public school in Dongducheon
Rural- about hour and half from Seoul
GEPIK
Salary- 2.1 plus housing allowance (400 000 won ) that will go in my pocket, because I will be living with my fiance. His school provides a 2 bedroom apartment.
My concern is that it might be too isolated.
Benefits- job security and lots of vacation, good salary
Offer 2- Busan Global Village
In the centre of Busan. Very modern school. No lesson planning.
Salary about 2.3
15 days vacation
Longer hours
I am past the age of going out to party every night, but the rural location of Dongducheon is concerning...... on the other side, the vacation and job security is a big plus. |

Busan is a highly desirable location. Many foreigners live there happily for years. |

Where does your fiance live? I'd pick the one with the shortest commute. Or keep looking until you find one in the same town. |

Have you ever lived or taught in Korea?
No!
So desist from giving out advice as if you have...
Or get your Wario to post on your behalf - |

I would suggest the public school job, the public school job is your safest bet. |

Bog Roll, I have always clearly stated on my avatar where I'm located and who I am. People can take whatever I say with that in mind and discern for themselves what advice to take from my posts.
The distance between Dongducheon and Busan is over 200 miles. If SAbabe intends to live with her boyfriend, it stands to reason that where he's located should make a difference in what she decides. Maybe they only plan to make the commute/visit on weekends, but it sounds like she plans to pocket the housing allowance and still something I think she should consider. Does she want to be close to where she plans to live, or endure a long commute. You don't have to live or teach there to know the effects of that.
What factors do you think are important in this discussion, besides criticizing my participation on a Korean ESL board? |

Kikomom has a point. When I read the OP's post I was wondering the same thing. She plans to live with her boyfriend, but is considering two jobs hundreds of kilometres apart. I'm not sure if the OP is thinking that she can just commute from her boyfriend's place to anywhere she wants in Korea. It's a small country, but not that small. It also has traffic.
Is the public school job in the same town where her boyfriend is located? If not, it will be difficult to live with him while working there. |

Sorry for the misunderstanding. We were both offered these positions. 2 Public schools in Dongducheon... or 2 positions at the Global Village.
We both have to choose between the 2 options.
If we choose the public school, then I will be living with him in his apartment.
We are currently working in Korea. |

seriously, go with a public school. even though it's rural, you're with your fiance, so it's not like you'll be starved for English interaction. i hardly ever hear good things from those village places. |

Even more important that you take the public school. One of you can say you are making your own living arrangements, and get the housing allowance.
Hypothetically if you worked for a private company and they put you on 2 weeks unpaid holiday due to swine flu then neither of you gets paid, it might be difficult. |

Q: Does the public school want BOTH of you for a year, or just one out of you two? |

Dongduchon is really ok! Its a 1 hour subway ride from Seoul. But there is a e mart close and several grocery stores. Plus towards the army base there are tons of western places to eat. If you are needing to go to the movies and sightsee on the weekdays this is not the place for you. I lived there for a year and thought it was cool because I could go near the army base and literally feel like I was in America for a second with great music on the weekends. Juicy girls were irritating but you are a female so it shouldn't be much of a problem. I also got a lot of first fun dvd movies 3 for 10k within walking distance. Also less expensive than Seoul as well. |

Plenty of times on this board - you have given advice where it was not warranted - based on soley your lack of experience on the ground in Korea - if I went around giving advice to US naval personnel about serving on what ship on a forum similar to this - I bet you would be the first person to blow a gasket - especially as I have never been a sailor.
As for SA babe and her choice - she will make the best choice for herself despite what we tell her - which also happens a lot on this board. |
