For those is Haidong/Haedong Gumdo, are there any hand to hand skills taught in the class or is it all sword play? I also posted this on the sticky, but I doubt that it gets much attention (though it was my idea). Just wondering if I should complement my Gumdo with some Judo.
Thanks

I do gumdo in a dojang near Gangnam and it is pretty much all sword play - basic movements, patterns and fitness and stretching exercises - and on the odd weekend, bamboo cutting for the adult black belts with real swords. On rare occassions, when practising with the foam swords, the master has us put the swords away and just fight TKD style with the sparring gear still on - the Koreans love this as they get to have a crack at the foreigner (in a good-natured way). I do gumdo for the exercise and just because I find the movements beautiful to watch and challenging to perform well. In terms of practical hand to hand skills, I would say it is not part of gumdo, although foot movement and coordination is definitely improved. |

Thanks, but it all depends on the style though. There are two types Daehan which is more related to traditional Japanese Kendo and Haedong which is more of a Korean approach to battlefield tactics. |

I did Haidong Gumdo in Bundang and we did mostly swords, no hand-to hand. |
