I think that it is important to include the business community into the problem solving matrix of this very important issue. Rehabilitation programs are often a source of training for a lot of mentally ill patients that help integrate them back into the workforce. In some states, businesses have a cooperative relationship with the government where they hire rehab patients, the states give those businesses tax cut benefits, and the companies benefit from the labor pool as well.
I worked as a case worker that acted as a liaison between a state and business program where businesses hired mentally ill and handicap workers. The mentally ill really need to have counselors, housing, and a jobs to help them from relapsing into criminal behavior or end up homeless. The inclusion of the business community is essential. |
