It just turns out some old friends of mine aren't as great as I thought they were.
My fiance is in Seoul until February. I probably shouldn't spend the money to visit him because we need to save it for our awesome honeymoon.
My phone bill for the 1st month was $175.00.
Tomorrow it's supposed to snow.
I really, really miss Korea and am really craving some good 비빔냉면 and 갈비탕.
I'd go back to SMOE and work a winter camp if I could right now just to be in the country.
I am so Asian-starved I was at the local university library and made friends with the Korean librarian. I might do a language exchange with his wife once a week.

Job-hunting time is here again and I am once again filled with ambivalence. I want a real career, but I can't afford to go back to university and get the real qualifications. (yet)
Also I've been indulging in too much wine and chocolate the last couple weekends and I feel kinda fat.
Aside from that, things are awesome. |

Really. But it's still not as bad as my $300 phone bills between Hawaii and Florida back in 1985! 
It's a natural thing that some friends drift apart over time. Some will stick with you for a lifetime, but others find their own niche in life and have developed different interests and values beyond the old times that you've shared.
Unless you've landed a job, definitely go for a winter camp. But resolve yourself to the anticipated separation just in case it doesn't pan out. (Don't set yourself up for disappointment) |

Yeah, I have Skype, but I can't really force all my friends to get that. I already tried when living in Korea, and even then people didn't really catch onto it.
There are no good Korea restaurants in my area. I have to go to Boston/Cambridge or NYC, which are only 3 hours away. Trust me; that's all I eat when I can get to those cities.
Hopefully when the language exchange starts, I can get the woman to make some homemade mandu for me. |

Yeah, that's the thing, too. All my friends are scattered, and I only have literally 4 friends that live here, and 3 of them are moving away soon. I spend a lot of time with my fiance's family, but it's not the same not having him there with everyone |

Molly- if you use skype to call people on their phones it's still pretty cheap. I think it is about 2 cents a minute, maybe less. Oh, and I've got a couple of decent mandu recipes, if you're domestically inclined at all- they're way easier than you'd think |

Totally get what you're saying especially the bit about being away from someone you love. I read a book once that said something to the effect that when God cast out the archangel Lucifer, Lucifer went immediately to hell because hell is being kept away from the one you love most.
I too am sad. My lesser sadness derives from being sick and stuck at home on a Friday night.
I say forget all those who try and fix your sadness. It is understandable and legitimate. I think you should embrace it. Wallow in it if you want. You are lucky in your sadness. There are people all over the world who dream at night about having as good a reason to be sad like you. |

That's very true. I am lucky to have the life I do, and I am blessed. I think I'm just going through a weird funk.

I am a domestic goddess, so please pass those recipes over!
I call my relatives in the US and friends abroad with Skype, but as you know you can't carry it around! I do, however, have it forwarded to my cell, but that doesn't happen often. |

Molly,
You can use skype to call peoples cellphones or homephones. They dont need to have skype with them at all. Just buy some skype credit and dial the number you want to call and itll connect you. Ive been doing it for 3 years with my gf/wife in korea... Calling a cellphone in korea on skype cost 9 cents a minute and calling and landline is dirt cheap like 2 cents. Really just try it.( and they have other deals where you can pay monthly for unlimited calls to the US and whatnot)...Dont worry about htem having skype or not it really doesnt matter. They dont need to forward anything at all you can use skype like a normal phone on your end to call any other phones.
Mandu is easy to make. Buy some ground pork/beef , tofu, ( glass noodles if you want noodles in there), eggs ,green onions, garlic , fresh ginger ect.. or wahtever else you want to put in there. Mix it all up with your hands and start wrapping. Youll just need to learn how to properly wrap them. Then stream or pan fry them... |

Yeah, I've been using Skype for years, but people in the US aren't that thrilled about it (at least the people I know) and people call me during the day when I am out and about. It's the whole Verizon night and weekends and verizon-to-verison that's the only thing that's saving me. I just don't pick up the phone during the day unless I need to.
There aren't good Asian Markets in my area.  I could get stuff at the regular ol' grocery, but it's not the same. |

Poor molly. is this reverse culture shock? I've heard of it, never had it. Did you watch all lemon demon's stuff on youtube? that's funny, might make you happier. But I think sad stuff when your sad is cathartic. portishead and sad movies and booze.
