I am currently planning an epic motorcycle trip across Australia and I'm looking for travelling companions. I'm willing to do this alone but it will be a lot better with a friend.
Is there anyone here finishing up a contract in March 2010 who might want to come to Australia? Dates are somewhat negotiable but Id like to start mid March and run for a month.
I'm renting from this company.

They provide all kinds of bikes but I'm most interested in the Suzuki DR 650, it's a fairly light weight enduro style bike and it comes equipped with panniers.
The bike rental will cost about 2200 Aus for 25 days, plus 150 for rental camping equipment, 100 for a GPS, and 3-400 each for food and fuel. They provide helmet rentals, jackets, and other supplies for low cost if needed.
I am planning on starting in Melbourne and then travelling northeast to Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, then directly west across Queensland through the Outback to Alice Springs, South to Adelaide, and then back to Melbourne.

I've heard through the grapevine that it is a matter of taking the bike and it's serial number to your local office (same place you would register it) and making the request. I have no experience, only the word of nameless Korean guy. |

The new Roadwins have plastic tanks. Apparently most new sport bikes have plastic tanks now...or so I heard on a product review of the 250 Comet (they said it was a little old fashioned because of the metal tank).
The new Ducati Monster has all plastic parts and can change colour with a kit of plastic covers that can be put on or taken off in 3 minutes.

Ah well, if Duccatti is doing it, it probably isn't a cheapo design flaw then as I though..
I just imagined, I don't know, placcy tank warping in the sun or you crash the bike, tank cracks and fuel spills out everywhere and you better prey there are no freshly tossed ciggie butts lying around.... |

There is a gas tank and a tank cover (the thing most of us think is the tank). The tank cover is cheap to replace if it's plastic, lighter than metal. Lighter and easier to replace. |

Anyone know where I can find a 50cc scooter (used, reasonable price)? That would be great. From the information I've gathered, I don't need a license or insurance, correct?
I've seen scooters sold for 300,000... that would be awesome to find something comparable to that amount. |

Every little scooter dealership I've seen has at least four or five old 50ccs lying around. The cheapest I've seen was 200'000. Popular opinion as to whether you need a license for a 50cc seems to change daily, so I'm not entirely sure, but I can say with confidence, as long as you're not in Seoul, you can drive around without your license all you want and the cops won't bother you. |

Well that's what I've been told by my students - that you don't need any license or insurance for 50cc. That's what I'll be looking for.
Would it be best just to ask some of my students to help me find one? The teachers here sure wouldn't help me with this. They would rather see me walk so they could laugh about it. |

Once again, a license PLATE is not needed. A DRIVERS license is legally required. |

| I'd say a Daelim Magma is your best bet for a decent 125cc motorcycle for 600'000 or less. They stopped making them in the early 00s and there are still loads of them on the roads. |

| They changed Passo today. It's easier to browse bikes by type now, but it took me a while to find out how to do it since I was mostly navigating by feel before. |
