| Say you decided to spend the rest of your days here, not in the city, but somewhere where it's affordable to build your own house on your own land. Would you spend the extra maybe 15,000 to build a concrete shelter underneath your house in the event of war? Obviously it would be usable during peacetime as a pantry or something. |

Seems like an unneccessary expense.
1. There is little likelihood of nuclear war
2. A shelter will just keep one alive until they decide to walk out and find completely UNinhabitible destruction
3. Kimchi staves off radiation poisoning

| I dunno, it doesn't have to be a nuclear war. There's plenty of artillery pointed at SK. |

Actually it is not a bad idea.
NorK is pretty unstable and I would def not rule out the chance of another war happening. Especially with Kim Jong Il at Death's door. Take a trip to the DMZ and you will see that some of the army tunnels that NorK made are fairly recent.
If a war did happen, NorK has everything to gain (since they have nothing) and the South has everything to lose.
China is massing a huge military as of late, and they are quite chummy with the NorKs.
If you have the money, build it.
Better yet, start planning your exit. |

No, China is not that chummy with the North. The North seems to really irritate China with its antics. China (and Russia) are simply the only ones who tolerate the North. It would be much more damaging for China to side with the North. Supporting the North in actions against South Korea would mean that China would lose its ties with some of its most important partners, namely the US, Japan, S. Korea and more.... No way it's gonna happen. |

Where are you building the shelter? In the event of war, my first priority would be to get out of Seoul/Korea. I'd only live in a shelter in Seoul if I was stuck.
I'm not sure what the bombardment rate from artillery would be like in other cities, but I imagine in the countryside (unless you are near the border) then it would be negligible. I don't think the North will be dropping many bombs from planes, as U.S. has air supremacy (unless China gets involved).
Then there is chemical, nuclear, and infantry attacks. A shelter isn't going to help you much against infantry, unless it's well disguised (everybody in your village will know it's there and they'll be looking to save their lives).
Build a shelter, just not necessarily where you currently live.

Because you have to be rich to buy land in Seoul or Incheon or something.
I think as far as the war goes, there would be bombardment with a lot of artillery, whatever missiles they had, etc. Then the US would turn them back to the stone age rather quickly, so I wouldn't be worried about soldiers after the first day or so, and only if I was really close to the border. Also, if you live in the suburbs of a city and the city center is hit with a nuclear weapon, the shelter can save your life. Many people in Negasaki who were only 3/4 of a mile from the blast site lived through the explosion because of simple home shelters.
And you could also use it as a pantry, or to hide your millions. |

surely the subway would be just as effective if not more effective as a shelter |

No... because it will just flood during a direct hit from a typhoon. |

My friend who's in the army here says that the Norks could only hit Uijeongbu in the event of any succesful movement into the South, and this attack can only happen in the winter b/c the fields are not navigable unless frozen. The USFK views a destruction of Seoul as a failure in their war games, so it's unlikely that this will just come out of nowhere.
I'd be more worried about a biological/chemical attack my own self. |

Personally I'd never invest in a shelter.
Although, there could be a moment when I shake my fist at the sky and exclaim "Oh why oh why I didn't build a shelter!" I find that scenario highly unlikely.
For the mere fact if there is a war. I'd probably screwed with or without a shelter.
Aerial bombings? Screwed
Nuclear bombing? Very screwed
Army invasion? Well if you can somehow manage for them to totally ignore and bypass the shelter and they only occupy your area for less than 1 month then yeah... otherwise screwed.
Biological warfare? Screwed
Chemical warfare? Screwed
... What are some scenarios a shelter might actually help you??? |
