Hey, I thought Korea was the most racist place on earth and us enlightened Westerners need to teach those moguls a lesson in tolerance!! Ummm....

I will absolutely agree with you: many parts of the STATE of Louisiana are just as racist as many parts of the COUNTRY of Korea.
I can't speak for everyone, but when I point out instances of racism in Korea, I'm not doing it from the viewpoint of 'enlightened westerner' but of human being and husband.
The day I can walk with my wife through Seoul (which is one of the best cities in South Korea in terms of tolerance) and not get a single dirty look from any adjosshi, I promise you, I will come right here and post it and happily eat crow all day long. And I'm actually not being sarcastic - I long for that day. I'm pretty confident it will come, in time.
Maybe one day the same will be true in Louisiana. |

Exactly.
It speaks volumes when the capital and most cosmopolitan area of one culture is constantly being compared to the rural, isolated area of another. |

Depends on who's doing the comparison and what are their background and credentials that enable them to make said comparison valid? Simply saying it's so doesn't mean squat. |

I'm glad to hear this - no sarcasm. Unfortunately, this has not been my experience. Once when visiting Korea with my wife and another American friend who is also married to a Korean, we had an adjosshi come up and shake his fist at me and my friend and spit on the ground in front of my wife - who, by the way, is truly one of the kindest, sweetest people I know. This is also a woman who LOVES her country. I mean, she really, really loves Korea. This hurt her deeply, which is probably the only reason I really cared. My skin is pretty thick. When I'm out by myself I ignore any random BS without much difficulty.
True, not every person in Seoul walked up and did this, but it was the only country we've been to (and we've travelled a lot) that ever hurt my lovely wife in this way. She's since hardened up, but at that time it depressed her for days.
There is a difference between this kind of thing and pure, ignorance-based racism. My mother-in-law loved me from the first, but many of her helmonee/hanabogee neighbors were visibly uneasy at first when they were introduced to me. There were even a few scowls. HOWEVER - in deference to my mother-in-law, none refused entrance to their homes, and almost all warmed up when they got to know me. Hatred was not involved in these encounters.
Could I expect the same from the adjosshi who spit on the ground? Not likely. His was a hate-based action. People need to differentiate here.
I have no major problems with Korea. It gave me the woman I'll love till I die. But I can't forgive or tolerate someone hurting her like that. And while it's not an epidemic-level experience, neither is it an isolated issue. It's a problem. And yes, apologistas, it's still a problem even if it's also happening elsewhere! |

I've had it twice and my best friend has had it many times. Lucky for me both times the Korean girlfriend got up in the weedy 25 year old business guy's face, screamed at him and pushed him away and he slunk off before I could pick up the nearest odeng stick and shove it in his flowerboy eye. |

I wonder why I hear about how horrible it is for black people here on Daves only...

I think horrible is a big exaggeration and I don't think anyone has been saying that. I was present in my director's office once though when he told he decided to turn down a black guy from South Africa's application because of fears over his reception.
Of course I must be lying because that would never happen here though, right? |

My boss was very adamant about not hiring black people. Told me to ignore emails or calls from black people. |

So what? You keep using your various isolated experiences as some kind of invalidation of what other people say. It's completely nonsensical. |

Using that logic I could claim that the ghettos in the US are completely safe since I've visited several and have never been robbed or shot at. The media is giving urban areas in the US a bad rap. |

Another interesting complaint. Its scary how they can be so blunt about not wanting to hire black people, only whites! I mean wouldn't they scream bloody murder if this happened in one of our countries against an asian? And rightfully so. Whatver about there being a few racist or xenophobic Koreans out there, it shouldn't be at this level of authority. |

Actually...using YOUR OWN logic you could say that.
You're saying that anecdotal evidence is proof of the absolute norm. |
