Hi guys,

I'm losing my mind trying to come up with different comments to write on the students' monthy reports.

I was thinking that we could all add different teacher comments to this post so that we can all use them when the time comes...Suzie is a good girl, etc.

Remember, hakwans are businesses. I've been told not to give the students anything less than a B, so positive teacher comments would be most welcome.

Here's some serious ones I found (pretty boring though)

Is learning to share and listen.
Is becoming more dependable during work periods
Is showing interest and enthusiasm for the things we do.
Is learning to occupy his time constructively.
Wants responsibilities and follows through.
Can be very helpful and dependable in the classroom.
Has great potential and works toward achieving it.
Working to full capability.
Is learning to be a better listener.
Enthusiastic about participating.
Gaining more self-confidence.
Has a pleasant personality.
Is learning to listen to directions more carefully.
Has been consistently progressing.
Seems eager to improve.
Is cooperative and happy.
Volunteers often.
Is willing to take part in all classroom activities.
Learns new vocabulary quickly.
Is a steadfast, conscientious worker.
Anxious to please.
Has a pleasant disposition.
Works well.
Making steady progress academically.
Quality of work is improving.
Responds well.
Has an excellent attitude.
Unusually mature.
Is a clear thinker.

But, I personally prefer these:

Since the last report, this student has reached rock bottom and started to dig.

This student is really not so much of a has-been as more of a definite won't-be.

Works well when under constant supervision and cornered like a rat in a trap.

He would be out of his depth in a parking lot puddle.

This young lady has delusions of adequacy.

He sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them.

This student should go far, and the sooner he starts, the better.

Got a full 6-pack, but lacks the plastic thing to hold it together.

He's been working with glue too much.

He brings a lot of joy whenever he leaves the room.

If you see two people talking and one looks bored, he's the other one.

Some drink from a fountain of knowledge; he only gargled.

His wheel is turning, but the hamster is dead.

I've actually used all of these at one time or another.
I've also included the "real" meaning to the report card comments.

A class leader=child instigates trouble among classmates

Lets his/her needs be known=s/he is a whiner

Child has well developed major motor skills=child runs and jumps all over classroom during class time

Child has well developed minor motor skills=child draws/scribbles on everything

Child is part of large social group=s/he speaks only Korean and never pays attention

Child never causes problems=s/he is a sleeper or loner.

S/he makes inventive uses of available materials=s/he uses classroom objects (chairs, desks, etc...) to beat other children.

Child is good at persuading his/her peers=child is a bully

Childs English is well developed=child speaks English slightly better than classmates

Childs English is adequately developed=child speaks English at equal level of other classmates

Childs English is developed=child speaks English below average.

Childs speaking ability will develop after long term study=child will be studying English forever because s/he never does/tries/pays attention to anything now.

This child has potential.

I believe with continued effort this child will speak English someday.

Child stands above his/her classmates=Child is taller than the other children.

Child has well developed vocal capacity=Child screams all the time.

Child sings well.

reading all of these makes me glad 1) I don't teach kids and 2) don't teach in a hogwon.

I loved that one, "works well under constant supervision and cornered like a rat". I've taught a few of those.

I don't know what the problem is coming up with new things to write on report cards. Why? Except for the top 5% and the bottom 5% all my kids basically just work and progress nicely. Stick to "motivated" and "enthusiastic". The parents don't meet up and compare report cards so we can repeat ourselves ad nauseam.

Actually, all far-east people love, "measurable progress". This means the parents are more interested in the meaningless grades, and if it is higher or lower than last month, than the comments. If they can read the comments (most can't. not my sucky writing anyway).

How about:

He needs to work on phonics and basic pronunciation if he is going to improve.

She needs to take her books out and show some interest if she is going to learn anything.

If she was as interested in learning English as she is in being rude, she would be a fantastic student.

He is a good student, but he could be much better if he would try. He doesn't seem very interested in learning English.


The thing I've noticed is that it really doesn't seem to matter what I write, they can't read it anyway.

How about this on all of them:

I have been instructed by the school to give #student X good grades, under no circumstances a fail, and told if I make negative comments the report will be returned to me for amendment.

My last school- in writing too. Sorry I don't have it in me to be more helpful after that.

I'm fairly honest on my report cards I'm afraid. I never mark "fail" as such, but i do include an overall grade on a scale of 1-5. However I'm also fairly generous, so no kid has yet scored a "5" ("much room for improvement".)

I started filling out report cards honestly, and guess what, they stopped asking me to fill them out for most classes!

I have a class that will be 'graduating' soon and they usually want a FT comment on the graduation certificates. In the event they decide not to fill this part out themselves, two of my students will be getting "Molly / Tracy is a perfect example of what this institution can be expected to produce".
