How hard is it to find 6 month contracts? I can only stay 6 months due to military duties.
I'm a korean national, so technically a gypo, whos not quite fluent in Korean.
In a 6 month period, can anyone give me a BALL PARK on how much I can make(hopefully with some extra private tutoring on the side)? 6 month contracts do not give severance pay right?
I understand there are different scenarios since housing is a factor, etc. but just a ballpark would be nice, thank you. |

The only "less than a year" contracts I've heard of are for winter camps and summer camps. And those fill up fast.
I'm pretty sure they wont pay for your flight or give you any kind of housing for 6 months. Could be wrong on that though. |

I know people who have done 6 month contracts before. They agree to 6 months with the hogwan, and then do the paperwork for one year with the understanding they will leave after 6 months.
That was years ago when teachers were plentiful. Nowadays, I don't know the likelihood. |

I've negotiated one 6 month contract and a nine month contract but I was already in Korea when I found those jobs. In both cases I recieved the standard monthly wage of the school. Both provided housing but no air fare. I negotiated a bonus equivelent to one half the normal bonus at the nine month job. I think they helped with a flight to Japan. Both jobs were with small academies.
In short, if you can find a 6 month contract the wage should be the same as a standard position at that school. and the rest depends on how badly they want you. I think it will be difficult to find this situation if you are not in the country and the big chains don't like to deviate from their standard contract. But they are possible to get. |

OP,
Find a job for a 1-year contract and then after 6 months give notice of you having to leave due to military obligations. It's the military, so you can tell them it's not exactly your choice.
When you give notice, you'll lose severance and flight, which are things you wouldn't have gotten on a 6-month contract anyways, as said by previous posters in this thread.
Now, about the job and the money you can earn. You're a gyopo, so you have an F-visa.
Use the hagwon as your anchor... just a place to get your housing free and work as FEW hours as humanly possible.
Then earn ALL YOUR MAIN MONEY from the F-visa you have. Work privates with individuals or businesses...
Since you're on an F-visa you should have your schedule in full-swing by the second month because you can just search everywhere.
By the second month, if you are NOT earning at least 1,000,000 won per week, then... well.... then you suck. hehe |

well, a gypo is someone is resides overseas, but technically, im still a korean citizen with a residency in the u.s, so the visa thing doesnt apply in my case im assuming.
yes, if i stay longer than 6 months, there is a great likelyhood I cannot return home until after my military service.
so, flight and severance pay is out of the question.
for private tutoring, how much do you guys charge? and how many students do you guys have? (case by case basis of course)
main reason im doing this is for cultural experience, social experience, and the money(grad money)
so I should probably pay for my own flight going there and look for jobs not from the states but from Korea right?
with a B.B.A and a TESL cert, and 3+ years experience at a private hawkwon in the states, is it unrealistic to earn 3+mil won from day job(excluding private tutoring)? |
