So I've been reading that part of your health check when you first get to Korea is a dental check. I haven't been to the dentist in quite a few years (no insurance, etc.) so I'm a little worried. If they find out I have a cavity or something wrong with my teeth, what will happen? Has anyone been sent home because they failed the dental checkup?

If you're on the ball, you could get a dental check at an English speaking dental clinic in Korea, before your official dental inspection & medical exam, at a hospital designated by your school. I had my dental check with my medical & passed. They just put a notation that I need to have plaque removed, on my file. A few months later, the filling I had done in Jinju fell out. I went to Trueden in Ilsan, where I had major dental surgery in 2007, & they fixed it promptly for 200k won. Dental costs in Korea are about a third of the price in Australia or the US, & many of the Korean dentists studied in the US, Canada, or Australia.

If you're a horse the K will sell you to an evangelical Christian... who will 'deduct' NHIC premiums while withholding your salary on the grounds you are to old.

Don't even give it another thought. The first time I had a medical, they didn't even check my mouth, let alone my teeth. The second time they looked down my throat and marked off my teeth on the chart at the same time. They aren't going to kick you out of the country for having a cavity.

On a side note, be weary of Korean dentistry. They have both ends of the spectrum. Clean, efficient, modern dental surgeries and dirty, poorly maintained, unhygienic butchers shops. Don't be afraid to walk out of a dentists surgery, I've done it twice (make sure you pay, though.) Surprised

On a serious note -

I'm unaware of anyone being sent home because they 'failed' a cursory dental exam.

You have been given good advice above. Use the same criteria for picking a dentist you would in your home country. I've had a lot of dental work done in Korea and am very happy.

What about oral surgery being required? Will that have any implications?

What, you mean, like, a broken jaw or something? Pro tip: Maybe you should get that checked out before you come here.

No worries. I knew I needed some dental work too. At the check they simply pointed out one problem I knew about, and one I didn't. Now I just need to get it done!

Man. You paid and left during the surgery?

No. They were the only place that would see me on short notice. I knew the place was bad. So, I went and he wanted to pull the tooth straight away. The joint was filthy. There was actual dirt and grime on the tools he was using. No rubber gloves either. He had the syringe poised to go, I said "no thanks, just give me some antibiotics, I have a meeting to go to. I will come back later." All I needed was some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory to quell the swelling on my gum (impacted wisdom teeth).

Went to a decent place the next day. Only cost 30,000w. Would happily have paid that just to be shot of the first joint I went to.

Hospitals and clinics add extra tests so they can make money off you. All you need to pass is the basic immigration requirements. Beyond that it doesn't matter how other medical tests you pass or fail.
