Hey,

I'm about a week away from moving to Korea. I'm working in a public school under GEPIK. I was just wondering when public school teachers are usually given vacation time and in what amounts (how many weeks)? In my contract I am given five weeks vacation. I attempted to ask my co-teacher when the vacation time was, but she didn't really answer me. I think she just misunderstood the question. I also tried the search function on here, but a blank page just kept coming up.

Thanks!

Read your contract. What does it say in the 'vacation' article?

What usually happens is you get 10 days in summer and 15 days in winter during the 'students' school vacation. In December, there will be 'bids' among the teachers to see who takes vacation when. Then your co-t will tell you whether your bid's been successful or not. You'll know then.

No fair! I only get 20 days! You can take them when school is not in session. You have to request them first, and the request needs to be approved. At least that's what it says in my contract.

just find the start and end dates of the term and give your co-teacher a letter requesting your vacation days within that time. i've never had a request denied,; they usually just schedule your camps around your vacation.

I'm in the process of askng for my vacation time. Just some advice: ask more than once because they forget about it a lot. You really need to stay on them to get it approved or they'll just push it aside and work on something else.

it's different everywhere. my contract says 20 days (10 summer and 10 winter) but last year I had almost the whole winter break off school. I taught a winter camp for 2 weeks (only mornings) as soon as the kids broke up, and then I had about 6 weeks until I started again in March. I prefaced the whole vacation scenario with my V.P (who speaks English) by saying 'can you believe some of my friends have to come and sit at their desk during vacation? - what a waste of energy...' . He smiled, and then later that week decided I didn't have to desk warm.
