I have my old LG cyon phone that I want to use when I visit in a week.
Someone already suggested getting touch with HiSeoul and getting service at the airport. The website says:
"You can rent a cell phone at Incheon International Airports. Rental fee is 3,000 won per day, and a 600-won-per-minute rate will be applied (no charges added when receiving phone calls). Your passport and credit card are required to rent a cell phone. You can pay in cash or with plastic when you returned the cell phone."

^^ I'm sort of thinking that might be more money than I want to spend. I already have a phone; I don't need to rent one.
However, I am wondering if I can just take it to any LG store or a place in Itaewon and put man won on it, or have them turn it on for the 20 days I will be in Seoul. Obviously, I am not going to sign anything since I am just visiting, and I would prefer to just use my old phone instead of borrowing one or getting a new one.
What's the best/cheapest option? |

How long have you been gone? My prepay phone balance is good until April 23, 2013.
And the number is good until July 22, 2013. |

I left at the end of August, but I'm only visiting for a little over two weeks. |

What kind of plan did you have before? Did you cancel your account when you left?
If it's an SK prepay number, I can check it for you. |

For me it was cheaper just to use my phone from home than to rent a phone here. I got charged 500 won a minute using my European phone... makes it a bit silly to rent a phone where it costs 600 won a minute. It was more expensive if people would call me, but I would just hang up and call them back. (Before I got my Korean phone) |

I had an LG contact plan, but I did cancel it once I left. |

Might have someone ask at LG for you, but here's my experience with SK (monthly plan).
When I left Korea, I cancelled my phone service. One year later I moved back here and tried to reactivate it. They absolutely wouldn't do it without an ARC. I even had a photocopy of my old one and assured them the number would be the same. I showed them my new visa. Nothing. I had to wait the two weeks it took to get my ARC.
But here's an alternate plan.. do you have a friend here who'd register the phone for you with LG? You could do that, and use it for the two weeks you're here and then have them cancel it. I'm planning to get a cheap prepay phone and register it so my guests can use it. |

But here's the thing: I have had two hand-me-down phones in the past. I don't know if they were previously on contracted plans, but what we did was bring them to Itaewon, to one of the guys who own the phone card stores, give them 30,000won, and they put minutes on it. Then, when I ran out of minutes, we just went back. I'm just wondering if I can do that with this phone. |

Molly, I'll repeat my advice for you for the sake of others.
Rent a phone at the airport. It's 3,000 KRW per day. Incoming calls are free, and I think outgoing local calls are about 100 KRW per minute.
If you want to rent it for 1,500 KRW per day, go to the Hi Seoul website and reserve it before you come.

But doesn't the phone have to be activated somehow? |
