I had an interesting experience the other day. My oldest daughter (9 Korean age) came back from school and ask me how to play "tree bowling". At first, I thought I misunderstood her, and I asked her if she just meant bowling...but no...she meant tree bowling.

She said that it was in her textbook and it was a traditional Canadian kid's game. Then I thought it was just a mistranslation. So I asked her to show me the book. No...not a mistranslation...says namu bowling in Korean in her book and shows some happy Canadian children rolling balls at some small logs that are standing upright waiting to be bowled.

I told her that I had never tree bowled...and didn't even know what it was.

I have done my checking on the Net...and I am pretty sure this is not a traditional game in Canada...being Canadian myself...but before I toss too much ridicule at the textbook...has anyone ever heard of 'tree bowling'?

I grew up in New Brunswick and I've never heard of it. Could you tell us more about the picture? maybe scan it? I wonder if its a Newf or Cape breton thing.

remember 나무 doesn't mean just tree, it can also mean wood.

It's not anything I've ever heard of, and I'm from Newfoundland. The closest thing I can think of is lawn bowling, but that's not exactly traditional Canadian either.

I wonder if its an early form of Candlestick bowling? They use smaller pins..and its main area of popularity is in eastern canada and north eastern US..

if you get a picture post it, I'll run it by my grandfather, he spends all his free time reading books about Canadian history..if kids ever played a game like that he'll know.
