Do PS teachers get paid a set wage for the after school programs? If you only work, say 18 hours a week, and your contract states a max of 22, do they make you do the after school classes for no extra money? Actually, are they compulsory, or can you say no?
Thanks for taking the time. |

I work for SMOE. My understanding is that you work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Anything outside of those hours should count as overtime. Whether you are actually teaching 22 hours is irrelevant.
My school initially tried to have me working extra hours without pay by stretching out my teaching hours into after school. The SMOE higher-ups told them no way.
The contract says that you school "may ask you to work overtime." I take this to mean that if you are asked to do overtime, you should say yes. I teach after school classes twice a week. Do I want to? No, but i'm not stirring the pot and refusing. |

Unless your contract states otherwise, you can refuse to teach more than 22 classes/week.
You can also refuse to work more than 8 hours/day (or 40 hours/week).
If you are scheduled for less than 22 regular classes/week and they add 'after school' classes that are within your 8 hours/day, you cannot refuse. For example, at the beginning of this term, my school scheduled me for 21 regular classes. When the school district found out, they said I must do another class... my school couldn't schedule anything after last class on any given day because most the students are off to hogwan/academy - so I do an advanced speaking class one morning a week (8:30-9:05) when the weekly staff meeting is taking place (my reg. start time is 8:30). |

I only teach 18 classes a week so my twice weekly teacher's English classes and twice monthly afterschool English classes are done for no extra pay because I'm still within the 22 hours. |

Really?? Wow that sucks. I guess that's why it's important to sign a different contract specifically for after school lessons. I have 20 classes a week on the schedule plus 2 "after school" lessons (3:30 to 4:15) Mon./Wed. at so much/class x 20 classes. Done. |

Of course I haven't seen your contracts, but I suspect yours is the exception, not the rule; and you have either an extremely generous or extremely stupid school. |

Of course, if you have only 18 regualr classes you must teach 4 hrs of after school classes to make up your contracted 22hrs lol...
Also most EPIK / GEPIK contracts state that you must accept up to I think it's 4 or 6 hours of overtime classes on top of your 22.
Read your contract and stop expecting to get paid a full salary for only 18 classes lol.... |

i teach 22 classes one week and then 16 the next. as im 6 classes short every other week i teach an extra 6 'after school' classes. they are within my 8 hours of work (8:40 - 4:40) so i dont get paid extra. i dont mind it, i get breaks when the kids are in class so i get more peace.
if i go over 22 i get 20k a class. this is a weekly thing. so if classes are cut (frequantly) and i only teach 11 classes like this week. then i still only teach 22 next week. they cant carry it over. its a weekly thing. at least with SMOE anyhow. |

I have a weird question about afterschool teaching and pay.
I understand it's 20,000 W an hour, like in the contract. Ok, great.
When my school asked me to do afterschool teaching, for some reason they said it would be 50,000 W an hour instead.
Ok, cool. Then they said, "sorry, only 30,000"
Then they said, "only 20,000, sorry." I was like, "that's ok, that's what's stated in my contract."
I guess my question is: do your schools ever pay more than the contractual amount? And, why would they have offered me the higher amounts? Do you think they had some intention of really offering them, was it a mistake, or what?
Not a big deal. But--- I like plain dealing, y'know? |

One of the afterschool teachers approached me to help her as
Her " I heard you are a great teacher"
Me *cough cough* "Oh thank you"
Anyways, I asked her how much, and after immediately crossing her arms she says 30,000 per 40 min class. Fine I said.
The school ummed and errd and finally said yes. I do this now for 2 afterschool teachers, who both give me a wad of cash at the end of every month. It doesn't seem to get taxed, the P knows all about it and I'm happy as Larry at the end of each month.
Pay can be as low as 20,000, or some people get 50,000. There doesn't seem to be a fixed rate for everyone, as there isn't a fixed amount of vacation time we all get. |

you can do after school at another school. this guarantees a new contract and regardless of your teaching hours. this is my case, only bbecause my school already has after school teachers. |

I have been paid as much as 45,000 for after schools. This term it's 36,000. I get the same as the Korean teachers for their after schools. I also teach 19 regular classes and don't have to make up the other three (I think i theoretically teach 3 teachers' classes but haven't taught one since July). One semester I got jipped out of 10,000 won an hour, but I saw it coming because there was only 7 kids in the class.
I also sign a separate contract for my afterschools. It is clearly stated how many hours and how much I will be paid. |

my after school classes depend on how many students I have. They have to pay 30,000won for 8x1 hour classes ( pretty good value I think), usually sign up in 3 month blocks. I have to design the entire course.
Currently, I have 9 students on my course so its 33.75 per hour - however if I had 18 students it would be double....It just depends on my enrolment.
By the way I teach 22 classes, plus 'afters chool' classes between 2pm and 3pm 2 days a week. Doing the after school class is entirely up to me, but I have to get the relevant permission from the authorities above. |
