I would say it was 3:00am. It was on the freeway towards Incheon/Bucheon. there were two cars, one of which was a taxi. they were smashed up against the concrete divider. I think the passenger of the taxi was thrown from the wreck. He was in the middle of the road, face down, legs twisted backwards. I am guessing he was dead cause the paramedics were on scene but were not working on the dude. He was spasming trying to lift his head off the pavement. I watched the news but didn't hear anything about it. I wonder if the dude was just unlucky enough to have gotten in the wrong cab and not put on his seat belt. Something maybe 90% of us all do.... |

At least half the time the taxi drivers have the seatbelts disabled in some way. The most popular way is to jam the clicker down the back of the seat so you can't reach it. I got my GF to ask the driver why they do that and the reply was "It slips back", or some such. |

[Mod Edit]. what is with that? tired of getting in taxis and not being able to get the seat belt on. especially as ive had two friends in taxi accidents since ive been here. one, the driver fell asleep at the wheel and walled it. the other, the guy just ran into the back of a stationary car at some lights because "he was thinking of something else." crikey. |

I've never quite figured this one out. I guess they take it as a personal insult if you feel the need to wear a belt while they're driving.A sort of open declaration of doubt in their driving ability. Loss of face with a simple click. |

I used to take taxis short distances quite often. Sometimes, 3-4 times a day. I would sit in the front because the seat belt there works. Most of the time, they wouldn't say anything, but this one time an older driver stop me from putting it on and said something about it being a short distance so I wouldn't need it.
Needless to say, I didn't put it on.

With my kids and parents in law in the early days in a speeding taxi. 'Slow down!'
'Oh .. . why.'
'속도 줄려 ...' with a look of kill on my face
You guys who don't wear a seatbelt - wtf do you care about what a taxi driver thinks?? |

I was once in a taxi that drove from Itaewon to Pyongteak in 50 minutes.
I also saw a taxi drive head-on into a truckbed full of steel pipes.
Chung-al taxis are pretty much suicidal.
I would've felt safer in the pilot seat on a A6M Zero on a kamikaze run with the way some taxi drivers drive at night. |

It seems to be a very common misconception here that (a) only those in the front or (b) only the driver must wear a seat belt. Actually, everyone in the vehicle is supposed to be wearing "safety restraints." |

You people just don't understand. Korea is a special case. The laws of physics are different in Korea. Inertia only applies to those in the front seats, so those in the back don't need seat belts. Also Korean children are different, they don't need seat belts because the laws of physics are different when applied to Korean children. |

Dr. Kim's first law of motion states that Kimchi prevents inertia... |

passive aggressive much?
Didn't you say you were leaving here months ago?
I know many Koreans, perhaps as many as you, and none of them believe that tripe you are spewing. |

This is true. My girlfriend believes she will be safe in a car as a passenger without a wearing a seatbelt (front or back seats) and has a "won't happen to me" mentality.
Again, it is a lack of law enforcement and common sense that prevents a change of Koreans' attitude to road safety.
There needs to be more Government involvement and safety campaigns to highlight the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt [and drunk driving and speeding]. |
