That's a terrible example. I normally like more average-sized guys, but Vin Diesel is ridiculously hot. Laughing

OP, lifting a whole bunch of weights won't help you as much as you think in a fight, since that seems to be your main motivation. You felt threatened in the past, it's understandable you want to be prepared. But if you're spending your freetime prparing for a fight, don't worry -- you'll find one.

Thereal way to win a street fight is to be able to take a few hits and not go down, or at least get back up. The strongest doesn't always win. Train for endurance -- maybe some boxing, a lot of running, and Judo or something thrown in. Your body will get stronger naturally.

It would male sense if we lived in a violent macho society where you were expected to fight every weekend or if we were doing hard manual labor jobs. But that just isn't the case in Korea. Whats the point of being as strong as a bull when the only thing you'll be doing through the week is pushing a pen?

Ever been in Egypt when a Palestinian keeps following you asking very personal questions about your nationality when you get a scary feeling that he means you nothing but harm?

Ever been in mons, Belgium with a pack of Morocans following you yelling taunting insults?

Ever been on a date while being followed by three Korean dudes hurling insults at your date?

Ever been in a bar where a fight breaks out and you have to fight your way out of the bar?

If not then STFU!!!!

Better keep off the steroids there mr angry.

Dude prancing around like arnold schwarzenneger marks you out, at best as someone with too much time on his hands and an overdose of vanity,,. At worst women would assume you were personality-deficient and having to overcompensate.
You can pump iron for years but the moment you stop, then within a few weeks you have nothing to show for it except possibly a case of shrinkies. If you spent that time studying for a degree or learning a language then its a much wiser use of your time.

I really hope you don't think this is true... but I do agree the OP should calm down a little bit even though there is nothing wrong with being interested in fitness. It's a shame how little people care about their health these days Sad

This sort of reminds me of "Demon Denim" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/15/AR2009041502861.html

There isn't any reason the majority of people in the civilized world would need to get big--other than to be vain or feel better about themselves. Considering the work you have to put in, I dont' think most people would be motivated enough by those factors.

Unless you're an athlete or are involved in some sort of hard labor, what's the point? If you keep yourself moderately healthy, there isn't much that'd motivate you to attain those 24" biceps. More power to you if you enjoy getting big. It's just unrealistic to expect that most guys would want to be He-man.

I used to be a gymrat (started in college). That "must-get-bigger" mentality lasted for about 2 years. I didn't get much bigger, but the increases in the amounts of weight I could lift kept me going. I'm about 170 and got up to 125 freeweights in each hand for chest press (10 reps) and 350 regular bench. I then hit a wall and was bummed out for a while until I realized it was over absolutely nothing. Now I just work out to stay fit.

For all the time I used to spend at the gym, it probably would have been better spent elsewhere.

This is a good point. I use to get submitted and thrown by 155lb fighters all the time while I can also take down 200lb+ fighters too. Have strength is great but technique has the edge when it comes to fighting.

Uhm, but hasn't the UFC proven that being a walking sack of muscles isn't everything in a fight?

The UFC is a bad example. Mass does matter in the world of professional fighting.

But yeah, if you're talking about any random fight, odds are, skills will matter more than mass (if the size difference isn't too major).

A. The OP is nonsense. Go to any gym in Seoul or surrounding cities and you'll see bulky Korean b builders.

B. A lot of peole these days would prefer the male underwear model kind of look to the beefcake look. Think Brad Pitt in fightclub. I've heard most women prefer this lean muscular look to the bulky muscular look too.

Pkang - yeah that's what I'm trying to go for. I've started working out 2 times a week in the park doing varied pull up variations, push up variations, lots of solid, good ab and core work and tons of step sprints for cardio and legs. Less work and hassle than the gym but hopefully should have me toned up and somewhat 'V shaped' in a month or so.

I too would prefer to become like this... unfortunately, I have kind of a broader frame.

What's the deal with this? I thought it was a universal feeling among males to want to be big and strong. A genetic passing from one generation to another originating in our hunter and gatherer past.

I'm guessing you got bullied at school?

I should have never used the word "big" in my initial post because that's not what I meant to focus on. I'm talking about brute strength. If any man were given the gift of strength over-night and then asked whether or not he wanted to keep it, what would he do? Of course he'd keep it. Most people don't have the determination, motivation or drive to get strong so they just make excuses.

Everyone of you would love to be incredibly strong, but you won't admit it. The one guy who said he used to be strong is an anomally I think because I've never met someone that strong who didn't care to keep his strength.

I just love the feeling of being strong, that's it. It's not for fighting or for picking up chicks it's simply just a good feeling.

Also, I don't live in Seoul so there are not as many people here who like to lift weights.

Your muscles have memory so once you make certain gains you will never go back to where you were before you started lifting. You will lose strength but that strength will quickly come back faster than it did before you started lifting in the first place.

I guess it's more frustration on my part than anything. I've got all this knowledge to share and nobody wants to take advantage of that.

Bruce Lee may not have been huge, but many many people will testify that he had power equal to a man twice his size.

Contrary to what many think, Korean women like guys with broad shoulders and 6 pack abs. Many young Korean women will tell you they don't like the scrawny guys. They will say they prefer guys with a "V" style body.

A few years a ago most of my girl students preferred the scrawny guys with no muscles. They thought that Rain didn't have a nice body. Things might have changed since then though.

I squatted 7 a side, dead 5, and benched 4 - yet I couldn't give two rats about it now. At the time, I was in my mid 20s and bent on being big and strong, now I'm in my mind 30s and bent on being a good daddy.

Not everyone is focused on the same things you are man - and this is coming from a guy who used to be pretty focused on getting big.
