However, a Hershey bar and/or a pair of stockings could "get you" a girl during both WW1 and WW2.  |
You might be talking about Shilmi-do, which is okay, but not as good. It's not set during wartime but in the days after the unsuccessful North Korean commando attempt to kill Park Jung Hee (late 60s early 70s).
The sand dunes are, I guess, on Shilmo-do.
The Hershey bar in the movie would have gotten you far more: it's a modern, really big, Hershey bar and not the little one that was standard at that time. |

Because they might now share your taste, I think it's rough to call them all morons, but that's cool. I agree that money isn't the way to judge a good movie. However, your point wasn't how good it was, but:

I think Shilmido is better mainly because its true.I loved the opening scene with the music as the North Korean commandos come running over the snowy hill......those boys were on a mission! |

It is definitely a fine flick, but the reasons I didn't like it as much:
- Many of the characters were not developed enough.
- Every single friggin' Korean dialect was being used and it was hard to follow. |

Not really. The whole "brothers in war" thing taken at its base concept and the "old man looking back" narrative bookend is PRVT RYAN, as is the shaky war-cam schtick - and I'd bet triple nickles to the dime that if RYAN was never produced, this puppy wouldn't be around, but it's its own beast.
Pretty moving pick. Some weak points (the 2004 Hersheys' chocolate bar with complee calorie lsiting being used as a 1950's Hersheys' chocolate bar being a howler), but I think it ranks with Park Kwang-soo's TO THE STARRY ISLAND and Sam Fuller's THE STEEL HELMET as one of hte best films to encapsulate the Korean war experience in so much as giving the suffering a human face.
Since pop fought in the thing, once this puppy hits DVD I'll be sending him a copy and look forward to his opinion on the thing.
I found it a pretty humanistic, even-handed picture: rather shocking given thath the director made the mediocre SHIRI (overrated - cough-shoddy-cough-crap).
It's not PRIVATE RYAN. ME thinks you didn't actually see the film.

I really liked the movie but I disagree that it was a ripoff of Pvt. Ryan.
I actually liked it better than Shilmido. |

Agreed. Very good movie, Shilmido was a good movie but this was a better film. |

I liked the movie, saw it last Friday at ZoooZ (not sure if I have enough o's there). My husband originally bought tickets for Megabox, but they only show the subtitled version on Sundays there.
The only problem was the HEAT in that theater, terrible! I hope Megabox will start showing more subtitled Korean movies, then we can just watch the movies there (my husband works in that complex and gets free tickets once in a while). |

I saw it with two fellow former film students. We liked it. I saw that it had the look and feel of Private Ryan and the Old Person Reminisces While Going to an Archaeological Dig plot device from Titanic. I liked it that there's a more graphic portrayal of the Korean War without Hawkeye Pierce cracking jokes.
And the experience was made better since we, by luck, were sitting behind Jackie Chan and the director when we saw it. |
