I see your point, but I'm not so sure that the preference for studying French can be chalked up entirely to official bilingualism. Even without an official policy, you'd still have a lot of French speakers in Canada, ergo a ready supply of teachers. My understanding is that most American school districts offer Spanish, even though the US doesn't have a nationwide policy of official bilingualism. |
It's not that there is a healthy supply of teachers so French is offered, but it's the law. You learn French in schools and you don't get a choice about it. It's no different than mandatory math, science or English education. I took French because I had to, not because I wanted to.

As for your point about Japanese being more useful: that's possibly true.. I doubt, though, that the average anti-bilingualism crusader is fighting to get French out of the schools so that his children can broaden their horizons by learning Japanese. |
Out west, it's not that anyone wants French yanked from the schools but rather it be reduced to a choice. Example: B.C. is a huge export/import hub. We ship things all over the world. My family has been involved in business deals with Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese citizens. Had I learned even the basics of any of these languages I could have landed far better job opportunities earlier in life.
The only benefit my French allowed me was to read the side of a can of soda which is also in English.
In my school, mandatory French enducation meant that funding for other languages simply did not exist. Even if it did exist, I would have had to sacrifice another subject to have taken it like chemistry or physics and discontinuing French studying was not allowed until the 11th grade without special circumstances.
All that I want (and I believe the majority of others) is to shift mandatory French to simply a mandatory second language, and then we can choose what second language we want. |

I'd like to improve my french for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it is one of my country's official languages. I won't waste my time, however. I won't get any oportunities to use it unless I move, and I will lose it.
Here in KOrea, I can easily use Korean all the time, and when I go home, maybe I can make a Korean friend in my hometown.
I agree with Gord, for the first time. It should be a choice, and there should be at least 2 choices. |

I think there are two ways (two good ways) to go about bilingualism. One is to go all-out, to make everything as bilingual as possible. Spend a huge amount of money to make lessons in both English and French (so Math class would be in English sometimes, French others. French class would be a reinforcement for that). That would likely create a huge backlash but if a government could ride that out for a while it might show results. This would make a country with a French/English base, and then other languages would come into play around Jr. High and High school. That would require a charismatic Prime Minister more than anything else. It could also be spurred along by incentives for immigrants from French countries to settle in English provinces, and the other way around.
The other way is Gord's way, leaving everybody the choice to learn whatever second language they want, be it French, Japanese, Chinese, or whatever. This is easier on the budget and might be the safer way, but I'm not sure which one I prefer. |
