Hi All,

Next week im flying out to Korea to teach in a public school in Busan but just wanted to ask a few questions, im sure most have been answered before but i've got through pages and pages of threads and cannot find what im looking for....so any help would be v. much appreciated!

1) Anyone know anything about not being taxed?? My epik contract says i can be exempt from being taxed if i provide a 'residence certificate' (which is??) from the UK and also complete an 'application for tax exemption' (Where do i get this from?)

2) Is it common/uncommon for schools to provide housing WITH set-up internet at all. Im assuming not, in which case how do i go about getting internet for my place and which are the better providers?

3) Does anyone know if UK phones get reception in Korea? Or again what are the better deals when getting a phone e.g. service providers

4) When i get out to Korea i'd love to play a bit of football (soccer!) or rugby out there, anyone already there know of any social teams/get togethers??

Sorry for all the questions...if you think you can help, plz drop a reply - its much appreciated!!

Cheers

I'm of no help at all here, but I'm also moving to Busan in a couple of weeks and would love to get some 5s set up mate. I know another lad over there as well, sure he would also be interested.

Also, post your questions on the koreabridge Busan Q & A forum mate, should get a few decent responses.

1. I dont know
2. Your handler at the school will help you get setup with internet. In the mean time I would go to a PC room. They're 1,000 Won for 1 hour and pretty nice. All the internet is the same, I'm guessing. It's all fast.

3. You should just get a phone here. It will save you a lot of hassle. They're pretty cheap.

4. There are soccer clubs in Busan. My friends plays or used to play.. I don't remember. You shouldn't have any problem finding them. Just ask around.

As far as internet goes, it depends on how old your building is. If it's newish it probably has fiber, which means you can get a fast 50/50Mbps or 100/100Mbps connection. If it's older (ie. older than 5 years or so) you might have to settle for cable internet, like me. The download speed is fast, around 70Mbps but my upload is painful at 2Mbps. This can make a big difference if you use BitTorrent.

Fortunately any residential connection is cheap. I think I pay 25,000/month. Even the fastest 100/100 connection is something like 35,000 in Ulsan.

Get your co-teacher to take you to get your alien registration card ASAP, as it is required to sign up for internet service. Until then, a PC bang should e within a 30 second walk from your home. 1,000 won per hour is standard.
