What I find really interesting is that many foreign men with Korean girlfriends / wives say that they have been harassed by Korean men in public when they are together. Has anyone ever brought attention to these Adjesshi's that the number of Korean men marrying foreign women grossly outweighs the number of Korean women marrying foreigners?
I'm not a man, but these double standards really irritate me.
I have a Korean boyfriend and we get the curious stares but nobody has ever said anything rude or offensive to him or me. In fact, we've really had nothing but people be friendly to us when we are out together.
When I was living in Japan back in 2006, I saw plenty of foreign man / Japanese woman couples and it appeared as though Japanese men really couldn't have cared less. None of the foreign men I talked to said they had any problems when they were out in public.
There really is no point to this thread other than I just find the differences in cultures regarding this issue really interesting and I would like to know your experiences / thoughts on this issue if you have any. If you experienced predjudice, how did you handle the situation?

Are you suggesting that we start a discussion (with someone who most likely doesn't speak any English) each time we are being harassed to convince them that interracial marriages are ok?
Would most likely just end to yelling from both parts and more harassment and humiliation. |

I'm assuming your Korean girlfriends speak Korean. Many of the foreign men here can speak enough Korean to have a conversation as well.
Basically I was wondering if people just ignore the harassment and insults or acutally try to verbally defend themselves in a polite and constructive manner. |

In the situations I've experienced harassment I very much doubt a polite and constructive discussion is possible. I feel like it would be like asking a drunk to settle a dispute over a game of chess.
The second point is that from my understanding of Korean culture, such a discussion in public would be extremely humiliating for most Korean girls and especially if they have to do it them self. Some Korean girls can and will stand up for themselves but the ones I know would never had made such a speech.
My Korean is not good enough for a discussion, so I've just ignored it. |

The officer at the immigration office yelled at my wife when we went to apply for my F2 VISA. He basically called her a tramp and told her that she was betraying here country. She is not a fighter so she stared crying and we left. How does one defend oneself in that situation? You don't. She took the abuse and I kept my mouth shut because immi controls everything. The situation at that particular office has gotten better, but it has a long way to go.
I have also been walking with k-female friends and had men call them whores. It happens more than most people will admit. Having a conversation with them is pointless. If they were intelligent enough to have that type of conversation, they wouldn't make the comments in the first place. The best thing to do is walk away and let them kept their ignorance. |

I was also struck by the differences in experiences I had between Japan and Korea. In Japan, I never felt self-conscious about being with a woman but in Korea, I was always on guard. Quite the difference, I would say.

From what I have heard, there as quite a difference between Japan and Korea. I can't speak for Japan, but I can for Korea. I was walking with a female co-worker (purely plutonic) for a stretch of 40m and it didn't take long for the obvious. She just took off ahead of me after about 10m.
That was my first taste of what I had read/was told about this issue. My first thought. Wow, it's true. It's absolutely 100% true. I will not bother to pursue a female if I think for one second she doesn't have the ovaries to "stand up" for what she believes. Unfortunately, a Korean female who does have the "ovaries", is a rare find. From what I have experienced, Korean girls think that initially, dating a foriegner is acceptable. The meeting takes place, the obvious occurs and that's pretty much the first and last time. They crumble like a house of cards. Don't fool yourself in believing gender "equality" truly exists in this country.
The reasons for this issue. Continue to read Dave's.
Inferiority, farmer mentality, insecurity, nationalism and my all time favorite - PURE BLOOD. This whole country needs a basic explanation of Evolutionary Genetics. My ten year old nephew could give that explanation. |

Sorry to hear this. To the OP, as a foriegn male, you can't do anything. The cards are stacked against you no matter what mode of defense you may choose. If a confrontation was to insue, the truth might be bent in favor of the Korean, etc. It's pointless. This thread is really pissing me off. |

Look none of us would be here if the money was better elsewhere.
I know this kind of stuff is hurtful, previous poster, It makes me so mad too.
Just keep thinking fo the money and the fact that once you've got what you want this place will be a tiny afterthough for the rest of your life...
You've got to just live in your own world here and rise above it....
That said, it must be hard if you're married or engage to a Korean and have to encounter this crap.
I wouldn't be handle it without blowing my top and yes I know I'd end up in trouble with the law rather than the Korean instigator...
I'd have to tell my gal, we have to leave Korea or break up... |

| To the OP: Take your boyfriend home to your western country to see what real racial discrimination is. I'm a gyopo and once my brother and I took out a young attractive highschool blond who worked for my parents for a treat and got so many uncomfortable stares. |

Korean males are among the most insecure of any men I've met on the planet (and I was a globetrotting backpacker for many years). If they lose control of "their" women then they will have nothing left, and they know this. That is why the confucian hierarchy has rigged the system in their favor and criminalised/stigmatised the competition.
I would say the only way to win for the foreign male is to study Korean as if your life depended on it. You can't just punch these idiots in the face, but you can at least tell them off in their own language...and become someone able to function in this society. |

Most guys here don't date a korean girl seriously unless her english is good enough to carry on a conversation. I'd like to see where you get the idea that "many" foreign men here can speak Korean that well to engage in a debate with a random stranger. From my experience they are few and far between. Most people possess survival level korean and that is it. |
