Agreed. It is far from the prettiest looking eReader. It is far from the most open eReader. It also likes to steal things that you bought from them, and it likes to sell things to you that you will never own. However, if you do want one for whatever reason they've just released international Kindles, though as of a month ago they weren't available in Korea.

Get the Sony Touch Edition or wait for the Barnes and Noble Nook. I have the Sony and I love being able to make hand-written notes on the documents. But, no wifi connection. A friend has the Kindle...too restrictive.

One thing I recommend is that you use Calibre to manage your e-book library. It is great. You can edit meta-information easily and it will auto-convert formats for you if your device doesn't support the format that your books are in.

It's funny you ask this question, because my coworker has asked me the same questions and I'm compiling some information for her. Here's the info I have so far. It lists some of the most common (relatively speaking) eReaders, then the functions that I think are important, along with the name of the eReader in parentheses that does the function best, again in my opinion.

Some of these aren't quite out yet, and every week reveals a new one coming soon. Just know going in that you are going to get a cool eReader that you wish you hadn't bought in about a week or two's time because something shinier just came out. I've only owned the Nuutbook, and I've played with the Samsung. However, from the specs, I think the Sony PRS 505 is the best. It's the older edition. I think Sony is pushing for the most open standards, they've got a decent bookstore, and add to that the google books project.

barnes and noble does not allow the purchase of ebooks to non us ip addresses...

so unless you're planning on just reading pirated books, the nook is just a large paperweight.

FWIW, we've had a Kindle for 7 months now and love it. It supports a wide range of titles that you can download for free (legally) from various sites, and it's really easy and usually inexpensive to purchase books from Amazon, download them to your computer, and transfer them to your Kindle. The text looks great and the battery lasts for weeks without charging.

The minute I buy one of these they will flood the market and the price will drop to 50k. I gotta wait and keep reading my txt on my little PMP.

I'll never forget spending 200k on an 128MB Mp3 player in 2001 and less than a year later is was obsolete and worth practically nothing.
