| I wouldn't be at all surprised if the customs blocks were a planned thing to take some steam out of the launch. |

What Apple should do is get America to block Samsung and LG products from being sold in their country. I bet Korea would wet their pants and learn that they aren't the only one who can act protectionist.
I am still in shock at how Korea can be so protectionist and not have backlash from other countries, especially America. |
I think we in America (I am in Korea now, but lived there before) like our cheap Korean products too much to block their importation. I think the masses would be upset if Korean products were blocked because then they'd have to buy more expensive domestic products. |

Americans in the US don't have to deal with the crap we, who live in Korea, put up with. Therefore America doesn't give a rats ass about Korean protectionism.
Americans get Samsung TV's, Hyundai Cars, and LG appliances FAR CHEAPER than Koreans get here. Why would Americans complain? |

| I went into a Show store last night. The kid behind the desk said (through my girlfriend) that they would only sell me the phone with no plan for 600K. Anyone else get a phone under their name, on a plan, in their hand? |

It looks like iPhones won't be available to anyone besides the ones who were at their launching party until Dec. 1st. 600,000 is lot better than the 950,000 (for the 32GB) that has been quoted before. |

The summary of the arguments goes as this ― Apple is contributing to the suppression in flash memory prices by ordering more chips from semiconductor makers than the amount it actually buys from them.
"Apple should certainly be blamed for deteriorating the supply and demand cycle in the global NAND flash market," a senior industry official told The Korea Times, refusing to be named.
"Apple has asked Korean semiconductor makers to produce a certain amount of chips for its digital products, only to actually purchase a smaller volume eventually. The company doesn't make immediate purchases, but waits until chip prices to fall to the level the company has internally targeted." |
Maybe I don't know anything about business (highly likely), but I think Samsung has some control over this situation. Maybe they should, I don't know, write up some sort of contract or something about the quantity that Apple is going to buy before they produce a bunch of chips.
Can somebody with some business knowledge clear this up for us? Is Samsung just trying to make Apple look like the villain, or is there some legitimacy to their complaint? From my perspective, it seems absolutely ridiculous. It seems like they're trying to make Korean people angry that the big, bad American company is exploiting poor little (but actually freaking huge and freaking rich!) Samsung. |

| How can I get an iphone that can be hooked up Canada? I'm heading back to Canada in the spring but i don't want to wait until then to get the iphone--I miss my ipod touch too much. If I have someone in the US/Canada buy one and send it to me, how much duty am I likely to be charged? |

If you buy one in Canada, it'll be locked so it will only work with Rogers. You can get them unlocked, but it's a dodgy process, and it might be tough to get it reset for service there when you return. |

Considering Samsung probably loses hundreds of millions of dollars due to Apple's dodgy practice, it doesn't seem ridiculous to me. Apple is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE buyer. Samsung simply can't refuse to do business with Apple. Its like Walmart and their suppliers. Walmart dictates prices and their suppliers have to do it, or else they can't sell their products in Walmart. |

| I think Apple probably does try to artificially deflate flash memory prices. But I have a hard time feeling sorry for Samsung and Hynix, considering they've both been guilty in the past for price-fixing DRAM, and fined heavily for it. If the tables were turned and Samsung had the superior bargaining position, I have little doubt they would be doing the same thing again. |

Hear, hear. I know practices like that help support the Korean economy, and in turn, our wages - but that doesn't make it right. |
