Was the girl who made this comment Korean or a foreigner? |
Yeah, I was wondering that. Aren't all the girls on that show waeguks of various kinds? |
yeah, but from everything i read, it sounds like this girl is Korean *confused* |
A good percentage of the girls on the show are ethnic-Korean-foreigners, anywhere from 1 to 5 generations removed from Korea. Not sure who made the comment though |

On the show they have a panel of foreigners, and they do most of the talking. It's in front of a studio audience of Koreans, mostly women, and they occassionally participate. Occassionally they do have a panel of Korean men (one of whom is a kyopo).
Recently, I think, they've had a handful of D-list Korean female celebrities also on the show to kind of add balance, I guess, and there's been more participation from the crowd.
The woman who made the comments is a Korean student at a university in Seoul. I don't remember her name or her uni, but Google will be your friend.
My fiance likes the show, and I guess it's good in that it helps some viewers learn about countries and cultures they wouldn't think about otherwise. (Though they do seem to continue to be pretty ignorant of the US, and they like to make fun of China). But, the show is pretty far from being out to challenge any stereotypes. It's essentially a place for foreign women to flatter Korean men.
Could you imagine the outrage, considering how much trouble Vera got in over the summer, if a foreign woman made a comment like that? Or, worse, if a foreign man made a comment about Korean women?
Worth bringing up again, too, that over the summer they had an episode criticizing foreign guys, yet no netizens seem to get bothered by it. Here's an excerpt from an article Korea Beat translated:
Quote: |
Kenya-born Euphracia said, "in Korea it seems that if you're tall and just speak English well, you're treated as the king... My other Kenyan friends were so surprised when they went out with they Korean girlfriends." Germany-born Vera said, "if a German guy is tall then everybody thinks he's handsome in Korea... They come to Korea and start acting like Casanova."
UK-born Eva said, "foreign men who were not popular in their home countries are treated like kings... Its so strange that dimwitted western guys with, of course, very plain features are always being followed by pretty girls."
Eva added, "if a Korean friend of mine is thinking about having a western boyfriend I tell her to let me see him first. Once my Korean friend's boyfriend from the UK turned out to have a girlfriend back in the UK." |

Hmm, pretty clear where the line is.

You mean criticizing foreign guys. I'm sure the netizens would have a problem with criticizing Uri nara's "best and brightest". |

Oops, thanks, fixed the typo.
I think this whole episodes says more about men's insecurity than it does changing attitudes of women (thought it's weird height is such an issue among people who have been historically short). Since when do the opinions of a random 20-year-old (or whatever) mean anything? |

If they had any brains at all. They'd have retorted with "누구세요?" |

If you go on youtube and search "why do Asian-American girls date white guys" You will see a treasure trove of Asian-American girls telling the camera because of the very things that Misuda said. Now, would the Asian-American girls call other guys losers? Of course not but you can hear the tone and realize its not that far off from calling guys "losers".
Maybe for Koreans, times are changing but the Asian-American girls that I've encountered (yes I've seen many, most are friends and I live in one of the biggest Chinese-American neighborhoods in America) are far more materialistic than their natives. It's just that Korean women are catching up to modern times. |

People always seem to bring up how Asian dudes are being stigmatized and stereotyped in the Western media. I don't see it. If anything, the current trend in the US seems to be challenging and making fun of preconceived notions people have about Asians. |

For real. The whole Hollywood hates Asians thing is so tiring. I so got out of the Asian scene because thats all people would go on and on about. Always whitey keeping us down with his media image. Meanwhile I'm meet random hot chicks from Iran and Chile who get all excited when they hear I'm Korean and then all disappointed that I don't know or care about Korean Soaps. These girls know more about Korean stars than I do and have posters of K-Guys and are drooling over them. Meanwhile my Yoo Hok female friend is all like "Why are you into Korean guys???" and I'm just like "Man I should have watched those soaps with the church people, those chicks are crazy about that crap."
The point is all this media stuff is a bunch of silliness. Whether its the media making Waygooks look like the scum of the earth here and everyone believing it or Hollywood making Asians look like losers, its all silliness, and I don't care for either group of people and their hysteria and cries of "racism". |

*Women are not free to choose their partners to some extent (Parents still have a large say in who she marries). |
This goes the same for men. Men's parents get just as much say as women's parents. I have a friend who wasn't allowed to marry his hair dresser girlfriend because his father insisted he could do better.
Even though a woman who owns her own shop could put some men's salaries to shame. |

She isa 'Korean Korean' that goes to Hongik Uni.
She, and others, were brought on there for shock value - to try to show how young girls think. |

This reminds me of the first scene from "A Raisin in the Sun" where Walter Lee and Ruth go back and forth over eggs...
Walter Lee: Man say to his woman: I got me a dream. His woman say: Eat your eggs...---- MY EGGS ---- ALL THE EGGS THAT EVER WAS. |
