Hey!
Thought it might be an idea to group brainstorm ideas for winter camp. I have 3 weeks to teach M/S students and then 3 days at high school:
Hope some of you guys can contribute as it will be a helpful reference for future camps/teachers.
In brief this is what I have so far:
Interview a friend - 160 new students - never met - will draw their partner and make a poster describing them and their interests.
Team posters - Sure fire way to take up an hour
Magic Class - Students will learn magic tricks in English for 1.5 hours and then do a magic show for 30 mins.
Superhero Design (MES ENGLISH) - Students will design a superhero discussing abilities (can/can't) then make a 6 box animation.
Advertising - Students will watch 5 commercials and then be given random houshold items to sell by way of a TV ad. Students will make dialogues describing what the product can do and why it is the best on the market.
Winter Jeopardy - Standard.
Caption Contest - Standard
Design a board game - Standard
Design a soccer/football team - Students will design a new club. Where are they from? Design a kit? Star players etc etc (deciding between this and re-design your home town)
Pop Song relay - Students will work in teams to run back and forth writing down words of famous pop songs.. Then sing the song when finished.
Who am I game - Cards of famous korean celebs. Students must ask questions to find out the celebrity.
Standard games - board soccer, pictionary, last man standing, battleships etc etc
Skit - Possibly learn short skits to perform on the last day.
Travel Class - Students will be given a list of prices for hotels/hostels and food etc and then will draw a budget out of a hat... With that budget they must plan and then present a weeks holiday in the country of their choice.
MT Diamonte (MES ENGLISH) - Students create a story based on the Mt Diamonte adventure.
Blockbusters - English Quiz Show Quiz. (Look it up on youtube)
10 O' clock news - Students will draw a date out of a hat and then search for the news from that day. They will then do a news announcement based on Weather, Sports and main news headlines. (FULL DAY PROJECT)
Small Talk - Students will watch a video (origin of small talk) and discuss what small talk is. Then play a small talk battleships game.
Creative writing - Students will read a famous short story and then be given the task of creating a new ending. Then practice and present. 2 HOURS
Describing people - Guess who game + worksheet.
+ a lot of filler games.

I down to help/contribute.
I too have 3 weeks with the same 20 students [20 per level, 40 in all, 2 hours a day per level].
I have no idea how I'm gonna stretch it out.
Let me know what you want me to do. I am somewhat of a worksheet/powerpoint master.

Well two days will be used for making food.
The first day is used to introduce food, utensils, preparation, etc. The second day is making the food.
I'm thinking waffles (I like waffles) for the main meal and ice cream sundaes (I love ice cream) for the dessert.

Cooking are great ideas. It will eat up 2 days of the week.
Day 1 - lesson plan (45 minutes)
Day 2 - Cooking (1+ hour)
You can do pictionary with them as well. Students love competition.
What I'm doing with my school is a 15 minute newscast. The top English students will come and do all sorts of news, I will edit and do some stuff but they will be doing the research and what topic to talk about. Show it to the principal and he will smile like there is no tomorrow. |

Sorry, but how do you "cook" in class? Waffles?
I am guessing I could get away with PBJ sandwiches. |

Why not??
You've have been a member since 2006. I therefore presume that you have teaching experience. Doesn't take 2 minutes to write a list of ideas that you have for camp.
Always amazes me how unwilling people are to help other. I don't get it 235 views and 7 replies. I guess 235 people had camps, otherwise why would you view a thread that clearly said WINTER CAMP IDEAS
I am fully planned for my camps, I'm not trying to take other peoples ideas without giving ideas in return. I just thought it would be a great reference for future camps/teachers.
I will update my list later, maybe.

I didn't mean to be a jerk or anything. It's my first time teaching camp (and being in the public school system). My coteacher just came up to me last week and said "make a book." Generally I'm used to having a curriculum or at least a syllabus to work with. I also have absolutely no idea on the kids' levels for one of the camps. |

Last year,
I had them prepare and cook omelettes. My co-teacher insisted on some cooking activity. She had some of those 1 burner hot plates brought in from some other classroom.
I gave the Kt a list of materials for each group to bring, including cooking utensils. |

Hello
I have zero experience with camp, this is my first year at a middle school. This is what I have planned so far. Please give me any advice about things you think might be a horrid idea .
I'm going to split my days into categories...for example one day art, travel, music etc
So for art day we are going to make masks.
I also have a power point on some famous art around the world and a little worksheet, match the art to the place and some questions about each piece and which one they like best.
For travel
We will study a few maps and identify some countries around the world. There is a power point on the countries with simple facts like climate and food.
Kids are also doing a scavenger hunt around the school.
I wrote a few very short role plays for real life experiences....going to the airport, checking into a hotel, ordering food, giving and asking for directions.
That's all I have so far. |

If your co-teacher wants a "book" you might try getting an appropriate level of one of these:
http://www.oup.com/elt/catalogue/isbn/1015?cc=global
I've used levels 3 and 4 for elementary camps and my co-teachers seemed happy enough. But I don't know the level of your students.
Here's some on-line stuff you could use.
http://www.english-4kids.com/worksheet.html
and photocopying it for your camp. You probably should not use the whole book and you should have enough activities to stretch it out.
Use about 10 - 15 pages, and space them out with activities and projects.
mes-english.com has some interesting project ideas.
Ask if you will have internet access and video capability.
There are a lot of useful youtube videos you might try, but some schools seem very opposed to them. Not sure why.

Well apparently our summer camp was too much fun and winter camp has to be less fun and more learning!
So I am going to do phonics with the little ones, stories with the middle grades and for the top grades I am going to get them to make a poster all about them - teaching them key vocab and sentences in the first few days and writing and drawing a big poster on the last couple of days.
This is for elementary and if it gets approved as being enough like lessons.
However, if I had more choice I would do a lot more craft stuff too. Kizclub has some great things for that. |
