Curious to get some numbers about how much kids at your institute are forking out each month. Feel free to include general location or special circumstances that might make your numbers an exception. For example located in Gangnam, or the sticks. New institute vs. established one with good rep, or unique programs etc.

Isn't there an official government cap on what is allowed to be charged? (Yes, I know most places ignore it).

I'm also curious about if you provide textbooks and other materials, or do your students have to purchase these seperately (same with transportation and other services sometimes provided by hagwons). I suspect that hagwon owners get around gov't limits by charging extra for this stuff.

I was talking to a parent yesterday and he said he pays 500-600k a month for his daughter to go twice a week.

Wow, the 600 figure has to be a pricey Seoul place. I think CDI is more expensive for a national and its 300. My UniGwon bears the Yonsei crest and charges about 200 (more for TOEIC or TOEFL). The average out here in Wonju is closer to 100 but, hey, it's Wonju.

I'm at a Kindy/Elementary school in Sinsadong, Seoul. The school just moved there from Apgujeong at the beginning of 2008. The silly man that does the accounting for the school scanned a couple of the bank books into the NET's computer for some reason. I stumbled upon them and saw exactly how much the parents were depositing into the account.

The Kindies' parents were dropping in 1.3m per month. They have 5.5 hours per day, 5 days per week, a meal, snack, and the school provides transportation. If you figure 20 days in a month, 5.5 hours per day, it is roughly 12,000W per hour.

I only saw what one of the elementary students' parents were paying; 900k per month. This particular student takes both of the optional classes (science and social studies), so he has 2 hours per day, 5 days per week. Transportation is available. Around 22,500W per hour.

The books for the students are charged as they are issued to the students, and not included in the tuition.

**Edit** If I remember correctly the well know hakwon (which specializes in "returnee" students) I used to work at was around 2m per month, for each program (kindy and elementary). The kindy was 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. The elementary was 2 hours per day, 3 days per week. One of the NETs was very friendly with the receptionist that routinely took in the credit card payments from the parents.

200k for two days a week, 300k for three. That's about 2.5 hours of lessons, split evenly between foreign and native teacher.

Major chain in Masan.

I charge 30,000 won for my after school PS classes. There are three 40 minute classes a week. I'm getting ripped off. But, it's fine.. I would feel bad for the parents to be pumping out tons of cash.

2 days @ 2.5 hrs * 4 wks = 20 hrs. So, about 10,000 won per hour.

3 days @ 2.5 hrs * 4 wks = 30 hrs. Also, about 10,000 won per hour.

According to the numbers above, these are legal class tuition rates, about 10,000 won per class hour per month. These students count twice, having two teachers, so 100,000 won or 150,000 won per teacher per
month.

This kindy comes out close to the 10,000 won per hour range, and with adjustments for food, and other elements in determining the hourly rate at the local education office, it probably comes out around the 10,000 rate.

This could be a school charging illegal rates. It could also be that the single payment entered in the bankbook represents a single family payment for two siblings or two months at a time, or some other variation. Bankbook entries don't always represent what you think, unless you have more info.

***********

It would be more informative to know the hours and days involved for the schools above. Many of the high end schools in the poll are undoutably kindy or some combination of Korean school classes and English classes, meaning that each student counts as more than one student as they are enrolled in multiple classes.

Class hours per month are not calculated by multiplying the weekly hours by four.

Sorry, if a student has one, two, or three teachers per week, there is still only one student.
