I had a phone interview with a recruiting company tonight. The interviewer emphasized I need to get a state criminal record check from Georgia, my state. From everything I gather, the criminal record check from my local sheriff's office is one which is state-wide. She said I need to get it notarized and apostilled. Anyone have experience with this in Georgia?

I've gotten a state and a local in Alabama. They prefer the State according to recruiters, but honestly. They don't know what's what for most of the smaller states.

In Georgia when you get the background check back from the local Sheriff's Office, there will be a stamp. I assumed that was notorized and drove to Atlanta (thank God, I only lived an hour away) only to be told that it WASN'T notorized. I had a friend who is a Notary Public who did it for me, no one else would because they agreed that it was already....notorized. Georgia is crazy. Go to your bank or someone you know and have them put their Notary seal on it then take it to the Apostille. By the way, the address for the Apostille in Georgia listed online is wrong. Or it was when I was coming over in March. If you call the State Department they can give you the correct address, it's right off of 85.

I live in the Atlanta area and just went through this a few weeks ago.
Go to your local sheriff's office or police department and get the CBC. They'll charge you ($20?) for it, and you get in a few minutes. The document specifies its validity both locally and statewide in GA. Someone in the office will be a notary public, ask them to notarize it for you. The woman at the desk did it for me at no additional charge.

You'll then have to take it to be apostilled. I searched online for this, and for some reason it tells you to call the Secretary of State Elections department. They transferred me to the proper channel and I got the address from them. It's a little northeast of Atlanta near 141/I-85. You just need to tell them what country it's for and give them $3 and you get another paper attached to it with another official seal.
