Good points, Savant.........this is something I've been saying since rumors of the iphone coming to Korea started...Koreans live in an artificial bubble of quite expensive but ordinary tech products.
The exception being ISP costs which are really low. There seems to be real competition between KT, SK, and LG (plus other smaller local companies) keeping ISP prices down.
One of the big differences between here and somewhere like the UK is that in the UK you can score some great tech products in sales for 50% or less than the price it was when it came out.......Korean retailers don't tend to do real sales. They do pretend sales where something is 40% less than a fictional MRSP which it was never sold at.
I could speculate all night as to why the tech market is a bit retarded in Korea.......but I think one good indicator to start with is the Starcraft phenomenon. Here's a computer game released in 1998 that is still by far the number one game in Korea. Almost 12 years later. Does anyone know another country where a game can stay so popular for 12 years?
I reckon very few Koreans change their habits and expectations until everyone does. They are a strange kind of conservative people. They love what's modern, but won't actually move on to the next thing until they see most other people do it first. |

too true, the other day I told a few co-workers during lunch that a friend had gotten an iphone, and one of the teachers said "early adopter" i just kind of stuttered for a bit and lost my train of thought. Hasn't the iphone been out for about 3 years?
Also, I feel sorry for my kids. Almost every class "playing computer games" is brought up and they ask me what games I play... They just look at me with blank faces as I try to explain that I play new games.
But some of the smarter kids have gotten into GTA, so I guess thats cool. |

Hey, now. I'm still learning to use Internet Explorer. Back before firefox, IE had tons of security holes, but it was a pretty straightforward logical setup. Now, whenever I'm in a PC bang or browsing on a school computer, I spend about ten minutes figuring out how to enable and address bar as well as the standard stop, reload and home icons. And don't even get me started on the last few incarnations of MS Office. |

The first think I do when I enter a PC방 is download firefox. Takes all of 3 minutes to download/install.

You should get the portable apps suite. Then you will have a consistent copy of FF on a USB stick. With all of your favorite add ons and book marks etc.
