I've been in Jeju for a few months, have never lived in Seoul, but I was itching to run for the mainland within a few weeks. I hear the same thing: young people like Seoul, those with more sedate lifestyles like Jeju. On the other hand, I am in the sticks. It's probably a different story in one of the two cities, or even in Jungmun.
I've also lived in fairly populous regions for most of my life, which is probably contributing to my poor adaptation to Jeju's rural charms.
Things you may miss from Seoul:
Public transit. Good god, I love the metro. Buses on the island stop running around 9:30, sometimes earlier. The bus to Jeju City that runs through my town comes every 40 minutes. On the other hand, taxis are cheap and cabbies (and bus drivers) are ruthless road warriors who will get. you there. on TIME. (The one time I took a cab in Seoul, I was left wondering why my driver wasn't slicing through that gap between cars that clearly would've given us at least a centimeter of wiggle room, but that may've been an isolated incident.)
Options. In anything. Food, music, entertainment... anything.
General attitude. Jeju's a big tourist destination, so you'd think folks would be used to foreigners, but sometimes that is not the case. And a lot of places have the whole small town mentality going on, which can be discomfiting if you like your privacy and/or are paranoid.
But there are loads of tangerines and hallabong (fruit of the gods?) here, and you'll likely find yourself getting fed for free. Not to mention the whole nature thing can't be beat. Breathtaking vistas all around. |

Jeju hasn't those things. If you want cheddar, red bull, or dill, you should be prepared to genuinely go without said things. Also, as a white person with food allergies, I'm used to carrying an epipen. They don't have them on jeju. If you want one, you have to go to Seoul. That's something to be aware of. |
Most of the people that want these things buy them online from the nicedeli or other online sites. Jeju folk organize a combined monthly shop if you want to save on shipping costs. |
Wait what? Nobody told me that. Good lord. Do you mean I could have been having dill this whole time? Who are these people and how do I get in contact with them? |

So I know some teachers say Jeju it is the best place to teach, even over Seoul.
But I wanted to hear from people who are living there. Is it good or do you feel isolated due to being stuck on an island? It is not like you can get on a subway and head to Seoul for the weekend, and wen its cold I assume the beaches are no fun. |
You're not stuck on an island; flights out and ferries. True, it.s not the big city! And no subways! But, less stress, less crowds, far less smog! Look at the stinky air in seoul! |
The airport is also right next to downtown and much smaller so technically it's a lot closer to a lot of international destinations. When going to somewhere major it'll require a transfer, but transfers are way more fun than sitting in the airport bus on the way to Incheon. |

Jeju might be a notable exception to his rule, since a large part of the people on the street at any time are fairly well-off people from Seoul looking to have a good time during their day or two on the island. |

Yeah. Jeju folk hang out on the street just hoping to meet Seoulites to improve their lives.

Well how would you guys compare Jeju to rural Korea?
My husband and I teach in a rural town in Jeollanam-do and we love it. We are 1.5 hours away from Gwangju. I guess we have access to more places, but we also live in a town with only 5 other foreigners and no movie theater.
If we come back to Korea again, we would decide between coming back here or trying a new location (and the only one that appeals to us would be Jeju). |
