I saw the movie "Peppermint Candy" which recieved an award at the cannes film festival. It was outstanding. I dont know how to say it in Korean, but it has one of the best movies to date ever made in Korea. The director I think also made the movie "Oasis". The star from "Oasis" all had a small part in "Peppermint candy".
Come on you guys surely you keep abreast of the best of the best. so to speak. |

All DVDs have English subtitles? Really and truly? Seriously? Wow....that is so cool. I didn't know that. Thanks for the tip. Guess I'll have to buy myself a DVD player now! |
No, they don't. You have to check the back to make sure. The majority of Korean movies have English subtitles, some are only in Korean. The quality of the subtitling varies as well, but for the most part the english is good and the translations are accurate. |

I like the mvie with Lee Byung Hyun, where one of his students falls for him. He already has a fiancee. She dumps him and he winds up with this much younger student of his. I can't remember the name. |
I think you're referring to "A Bungee Jump For Two" which is a really bizarre movie.
What you neglect to mention is that a) his fiancee dies and b) the student he falls in love with is a highschool boy.
I really didn't like the movie but its so non-Hollywood-esque that its really worth watching just to try to absorb the story. |

"My Sassy Girl" is definitely my favourite. Must have watched it about 3 or 4 times now. Also like "Tornado High" (I think that's it's English name.) Saw "Phone" at the cinema last year (no subtitles) and was very glad to be wearing brown pants that day... scared the bejeezus out of me... that creepy little girl. |

What, no votes for "CyberPanty 2001"? Man....
Guess I'll have to go with "Bad Guy" too then, though I haven't seen too many. |

An article about selling Korean films and scripts abroad, from the authoritative and independent news source that is Seoul Now
My favourites are Jib-u-ro and Phone, nothing too complicated in the dialogue so I could watch and enjoy them in the cinema without having to pester the missus every five seconds with "What did he say?", like when we watched JSA (on video) a few months earlier. That could be one reason why I've enjoyed Korean films about families, friends or couples, it's much easier to understand what they're saying than soldiers, police or whoever with their more formal 'institutional' dialogue.
Found the gangster comedies 'My wife...' and 'Kick the Moon' a bit tiresome, perhaps there are some better ones? I also watched the ridiculous 'Emergency Number 19' (or something) in the cinema, a 'pop' comedy starring the very cool Kim Jang Hoon. The government banned pop music so the daughter of the Minister responsible kidnapped two pop stars and ummm it all ended with lots of singing and dancing in the park! That one was so trite even middle school girls turned their noses up at it, but I thought it was fun - reminded me of a few post-Beatles swinging 60s cash-in films.
There was a short Korean Film festival here in Sheffield (England), a bit of a failure due to lack of publicity and poor choice of films. It opened with My Sassy Girl which went down well, but after that tended towards the more arthouse side of things. For example Power of Kangwon-do.. which another poster said they liked a lot. It had a certain drowsy atmosphere, but not the best choice if you're trying to promote your films abroad. JSA is the onewith obvious international 'hit' potential, if only because the North/South situation is all most people know about Korea. |

My problem with most Korean movies is that they're usually little better than the "Made Fdor TV" crap you see back home. |

The film is called A BUNGEE JUMP OF THEIR OWN, and the storyline isn't as simple as a teacher falling in love with a high school student. If you or anyone else thought that, then you missed the depth of the film . I didn't find it bizarre at all; just a refreshing twist on a love story.
Whoever said that Korean films are slightly better than TV movies back home (wherever that is) is full of %##@!. The quality of Korean films has greatly improved, and the appeal worldwide for them is quite impressive. I have seen quite a few now with my new DVD player and although some are worse and cheesy than others, I would hardly compare most current Korean films to Made-for-TV movies.
I liked some of the more commercially-successful ones, like JSA and CHINGU, but I also liked some of the more neglected ones, such as TAKE CARE OF MY CAT and JEONG, both stories that focus on the lives of women.
Also, I really like Kim Ki Duk. BAD GUY was excellent. Did anyone see THE COAST GUARD (해안선)? |

My Sassy Girl was great, i enjoyed it in korean and even more in english.
Promise was a big hit, but unfortunately the dvd came out way back before they had english subtitles.
Guns & Talks has its moments
One that is in theaters atm and that i suggest you rent when it comes out is called: "Dong Gap Ne Gi, Ga Wae Ha Gi"
rough translation: Same Age Tutoree
very cute, typical Korean young age romantic comedy. i'm a sucker for those kinds of movies *^^*
And Kiwi. Can I PLEASE meet your girlfriend? I swear I won't hit on her in front of you or anything :/ |

i love asian horror movies: 'sorum' (goosebumps) is really scary and it's actually a good movie. others i like are 'memento mori' and 'phone'.
in the non-horror category, i loved 'my wife is a gangster'. my korean friend tells me there is a sequel in the works. |

I clued in to the DVD with English subtitles thing at the beginning of my second tour. I will avoid directing any derisive comments towards those who diss Korean movies. . .(ahhh alliteration)
Some of my favorite Korean flicks are:
Peppermint Candy - depressing but an excellent depiction of the Chaebol crisis era in Korea
Address unknown - a sad portrayal of growing up mixed race in Korea
Chingu - gangstas
Sorum - He was actually carrying on with his half sister??? holy crap! Dark, lots of killing and burying people in the mountains.
My wife is a gangster - hilarious
My sassy girl - liked it so much I bought a copy. very funny
Chwi Hwa Sawn - Period piece circa late 19th early 20th century about a famous Korean painter. Won an award at Cannes. Very good.
JSA
There are many more I've enjoyed, but these ones stick out. I got my DVD player for free when I bought a cell phone. Great deal. Now that the contract is up, as difficult to get out of as a Siberian Gulag. One guy keeps saying "nono you cannot cancel" while head office is saying "yes it's no problem". So much fun! |
