The yellow dust phenomenon which plagues the Northeast Asian region every spring is predicted to be the worst ever this year, the Environment Ministry said on Friday.

Officials said that unusually dry weather in the Inner Mongolian region the origin of the seasonal dust storms will bring the worst level of sandstorms the country has ever seen. As yellow dust can cause various respiratory diseases and eye ailments, respiratory patients, the elderly and young children should refrain from going outside when dust storms occur. When venturing outside, people should wear protective masks and long sleeved shirts and also make sure to wash their faces, hands and feet upon coming home, officials at the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Not looking forward to that phenomenon. For a change, the Koreans can justifiably blame someone else for problems here on "Freedom's Frontier".

Last year I was in Sapporo, and we had the yellow dust up to there! Can imagine it must have been worse in Seoul, and still a lot worse in China where it's coming from!

its due to climate change, as well as increased erosion as a result of clearance of plant cover.

How's your throat feel? Blame it on yellow sand.

You might want to head for the pharmacy before all the facemasks are gone. Meteorologists are predicting that fine yellow sand from the Gobi Desert in China and Mongolia will saturate the air over Korea in the coming days, with a probability that conditions will be worse than 2002, a benchmark for the affliction here. A month earlier than normal, the sand started billowing across the country on Feb. 14, weather scientists said, sparing only Seoul and Gyeonggi province.

Yellowish rain was observed in the country's central areas on Wednesday as yellow dust originating from China, along with rainfall, blew over the nation for the second time this year.

Morning temperatures will fall below zero on Thursday and the cold wave is expected to continue until next week, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.
