I have to prepare rules and punishments for next year's grade 6's.

The rules I have right now are:
- No talking when the teacher is talking
- No banging your books on the table
- Don't be late to class
- No swearing in Korean or English
- Don't tear your book
- Don't throw things
- Don't pass notes

Punishments:
- Student stands at the back of the room for 5 minutes for each rule broken.
* If the whole class is bad, then they stay after class for a designated period of time.

How many you need total? I found less the better, because when you communicate the rules they know how far to take things and will constantly test the limits.

I go berzerk on them in a random fashion. That way they never know what to expect and figure "well, if I don't do this, and I don't do that, then he is less likely to chew me out."

It makes them think instead of obey.

However, for your school, you may need to hand something in. I would make sure they have their pencils sharpened (no mechanical pencils because they love to play them them instead of studying or participating in class), and they should have plenty of paper. An eraser can be shared in groups, so make sure 1/4 of the class brings erasers.

I was told about 10 rules in order to cover all bases.

If you have just three rules, then they'll really try to test the limits of those rules. You'll then have to deal with students testing the same limits for however many classes you have.

Someone said you should just be a "bad" guy in the beginning, and then go to "nice" guy over time.

The problem I have is I'm currently teaching the grade 5's, who'll then become grade 6's next year. The grade 5's are nice and I'm nice to them, but I don't think they'll be as nice next year.

I have one rule: Respect. This covers pretty much everything.

Punishments? At worst I've had to take a couple kids outside my class and talk to them.

They know there are two steps after that: detention and being sent to the headmaster. A phone call to mom would be after the detention and before being sent to the headmaster.
