The larger percentage of communication is nonverbal, innit? I forget the statistic, but a lot more of it has to do with facial expressions and body language than actual speech. And a general consensus for American English speakers seems to be that a pause in conversation exceeding something like .43 seconds is considered awkward, which puts some pressure on all parties involved to babble desperately on to fill the void -- you guys would have a valid excuse for extended silences!

You could also have a language trade-off. I've heard that people learn a language that their significant other speaks more quickly than they would if they just wanted to pick up a new language independently.

Basically, go for it!

Nice to see so much discussion about this. In my case I wouldn't say communication is impossible, just it's more difficult because my level of Turkish is not high. Still, it's surprising the amount of stuff we can talk about despite the language difficulty. I can't relate to him the same way I would with a native speaker but I'm OK with that.

So I'm not really talking about a situation of two people who know nothing of each other's language but where there's still a language barrier.

I've been in this kind of situation as well.
My ex was Japanese, he could speak intermediate English, my Japanese is not the greatest.
He was as hot as hell and it was really fun for the first little while, but then the inability to communicate effectively really wore down of the both of us. Eventually I had to end it after about 10 months or so.
It lost it's magic ~ I think that is what happens eventually to most people in those kinds of situations.
