I never liked Rita.

In fact, I hated her. But this ending frustrates me. I'm a *BIG* revenge buff. It's an element of Dexter's vigilantism that I appreciate most - getting people who had evaded common "justice."

But now we have a situation where there can be no reaction. The deed is done. Dexter cannot doubly-avenge himself on Arthur.

And if anyone was worse to have around than Rita, it's probably Deb. And it seems that she might be brought in as "foster mommy" role if the kids are going to stick around.

Thoughts?

I must have been the only one who didn't remember the season would
end with a shocker. That being said Rita was a lame character. Always getting in the way of Dexter's plans: body goes in punching bag cause Rita needs diapers. Dexter chasing Arthur in his car, Rita calls. Of all the characters she was really the only one that they could kill off that would be meaningful and at the same time the only one they could get away with
killing.

Of course the question is what will happen next season? Will Dexter be
blamed? Will the police believe it was actually the trinity killer since the killing
was out of the cycle? Dexter's face will be on TV and the trinity's family
will see him as Dexter Morgan and not Kyle Butler. Which could raise tons
of questions. I really don't see how the can keep Dexter out of jail in the
next season.

Rita's kids stay with the grandparents, and Dexter goes on a cross-country killing spree with Harrison in tow?

Some thoughts:

I don't think it was an "out of cycle" killing. I mean, Arthur didn't get the little boy, but we can assume that he killed Rita five days later, ja? Which would fit perfectly with his clockwork-like ritual.

What I *AM* worried about is that the Dexter writers are generally good with loose ends, but Arthur's family, now told that their husband is a serial killer, will be questioned. During the questioning, Kyle Butler as a topic WILL pop up. He's the guy who threatened to kill Arthur, the guy who has been "hanging around" Arthur, the guy who suddenly busts in and asks where Arthur is and gets away while the SWAT team shows up. Then it's just a sketch-artist away...

I dunno about Dexter leaving Astor and Cody and raising Harrison. For all his faults, he doesn't seem like a "shallow" character, and ditching his kids (he did marry Rita, so they are HIS kids now) to their grandparents for his BIOLOGICAL kid may be a bit weird. I'm thinking he'll try to raise them himself, like how Harry took him in.

Perhaps Deb, who is still an emotional train wreck, will move in and act as a maternal-but-non-sexual figure. THAT would be a shift.

I've decided not to watch Dexter anymore because it's evil but I will miss the opening egg and grapefruit part. Love it.

I think the neat part is up until know you could conceivably see deb overlooking her brother's vigilante-esque killings as he was, ahem, 'helping'. Now the morality of it gets a little blurry as his actions clearly put the innocent people around him in danger.

Rita is at least the fourth innocent killed because of Dexter. In season 2, Doakes is imprisoned by Dexter and killed by his crazy girlfriend. In season 3, the public defender is killed after Dexter teaches Jimmy Smitts how to kill. And there were two killed in season 4.

Wasn't Smits' little brother innocent as well? They guy Dex stabs at the start of season 3? I mean, he was tied up in drugs, etc. but didn't exactly belong on Dexter's table if I recall.

Also you need to remember that Debra just found out that Dexter is related to the ice truck killer. That could put Dexter on the radar because of his parent connections, especially with the way the baby was found, which is reminiscent of the way Harry found Dexter.
I read somewhere that the producers are questioning how long the series could go on.
There might be a time when Dexter is finally caught, thus ending the series.

Dex needs to either be caught or killed. If he just stopped, I don't think it would feel true. I'm not an expert, but can serial killers ever really stop? Not in my opinion.

No way Dex runs. He feels too much obligation to his family, and running would cast all the suspicion on him. Next season, I predict that the animosity with Quinn comes to a final resolution, and Deb discovers his secret.

Also, I just discovered that the actors that play Deb and Dex are married. meh

Mmm, yeah, I guess you're right. But why does it feel worse that it's rita?
