Anyone worked at this branch before? I was interviewed for the position this week. Sounds like a pretty good hagwon/branch from what i've read.

Only thing that worries me is that it is shared housing. I'm wondering what they will be like and the quality of the appts

I was the head teacher there from July 2005 until September 2008. The apartments are stadard 2 bedroom Korean apartments. They are all within walking distance of the school. Korean apartments are kinda small by western standards, but they are not uncomfortable. You have a shared living room, kitchen and bathroom plus 2 bedrooms. The second bedroom is usually kinda small.

Slave Labour Program is making their serfs share quarters? Talk about lame. If you're going to put up with the Aim High, High Kids, and all that other stuff, you're going to want a place to yourself. If you're single you certainly don't want to be sharing facilities if you bring home someone special.

Get your own place. You already graduated from Uni, you don't need to live in a dorm with some wayguk who's got a super case of Aspergers and who wants to level up his WOW character at 3:00am. The supervisors might think of us as kids they can control, don't let them have such an easy time of it.

Listen, sharing your quarters while working for anyone who would buy into a business model tailor-made for crooks is the very least of your worries. Worry more about getting paid on time (or simply just getting paid), whether or not they are using your payroll deductions to pay for your insurance and pension (they didn't when I worked there), and how they will take care of your visa. When I worked there, I had no end of problems until I finally got disgusted and quit.

We went through a never-ending parade of Korean teacher because the combination of being paid a month or two late (or not at all in some cases) and being treated horribly was too much for them to endure for more than a month or two. They refused to return our passports or degrees even after we got our visas because they had already had numerous runners that year. When I interviewed there, they showed me a room full of computers that we could use to supplement our curriculum and stay in touch with our families (none of them worked)...actually there was only one working computer was constantly occupied by our gangsta gyopo manager chatting with his buddies. They refused to buy books or develop their curriculum so we were ordered to stretch a week of their scant curriculum into a month.

I'd be very suspicious of anyone claiming to be a foreigner who is defending that den of scum. I believe they use what's called the "Hellhole Business Model".

PaperTiger, PM me with details, because I do not believe a word you have said. Like I said, I worked there from July 2005 until September 2008. No one got paid late (the school was actually good about getting paychecks to teachers before the end of the month and not waiting until the 10th as stated in the contract), there was no "parade of Korean teachers leaving" and no one EVER had their passport withheld. In fact, the owner paid for a paintball trip and weekend ski trip for the teachers and regularly helped out teachers when they needed it.

Are you possibly refiering to another SLP? I am talking about Gangnam SLP in Gaepo-dong.

By the way, this SLP stopped using Hi Kids two years ago and now uses American textbooks (I know, I helped introduce more a content-based ciriculum to the school which has been adopted by the Language Program at Sogang University).

I have no problem with bashing a school that deserves it. However, there are good hagwons out there. This is one of them. The owner and staff are honest. Yes, it is a bit more work than most places, but that demand is also expected out of the students and their performance speaks for itself.

I'm talking about Godeok and it's sister school (owned by the same crooks)...but after all the complaints I've read on this site about SLP, it's difficult not to conclude there are some concrete reasons to explain that.

I suppose it's possible that through some bizarre aberration, your branch might actually be the only SLP in ESL History that isn't run by unrepentant bastards.

Does anybody know whether SLP hire 1.5 korean immigrants or do they only hire full on korean+ native english speakers?
