We are planning on traveling through Asia for a few months after our contract ends. China, India & Vietnam are the only countries we will visit where we will need to have a visa beforehand. The only problem is that each visa takes about one week to process and we live in rural Southern Jeollanamdo (5 hours from Seoul).
We are planning on having to make multiple trips to Seoul to drop off and pick up visas--but this is expensive and time consuming and were wondering if there was an easier way. Can we drop our passports off at a travel agent (like Xanadu) and have them pass the visas along to the necessary consulates for us and let us know when it's all finished? Anyone have any experience doing this? Or did you do something different? Curious to know how other manage this... |

For India, I mailed it to the embassy. For China, mailed it to a travel agent.
For Vietnam, haven't been, but don't they have an online visa you can buy and then pick up at the airport in Hanoi or HCMC? Pay like 20 USD and then another 25 or so upon arrival? I'd look into that. |

| Update: We walked them in today (despite the awful weather) and will get them back in 3 days (he said 4 is standard). W78,000 each. We called about mailing them again, but they really don't like doing that anymore as they have said loss of passports had been an issue. I was wondering about the online thing where you register with something like myvietnamvisa and then get the real deal at the airport. Are these legit? we walked them in just because we like knowing we are landing with every thing done. |

Depending on your plans, you might also be able to get a visa while traveling. I got both my India and Vietnam visas in Bangkok. In the case of India, it took a week, but I had my passport that entire week. You go in, give them the fee, photo, and form, and they tell you what day to come back. Return on the given day, hand them the receipt and your passport, and they put in the visa right then.
Vietnam took 2-3 days, but that was way back in 2002, so no idea what the situation is now. |
