IN a typically Korean move - the nation embraced the flawed DVD-R medium (when the rest of the world has pretty much embraced the +R medium). When I can find recordable DVD media in Korea it's exlcusively -R.
Anybody out there know where I can find +R media?

DVD+R has received greater sales as of late (55/45 or something) primarily because Japanese producers have rallied behind it and incorporated a few more features into it (which can be added in the DVD-R format easily), and because of the wider support more DVD players support DVD+R so people can make their own DVDs.
DVD-R was pretty much embraced by Korean and Taiwan producers and is cheaper.
That's about the sum of it. More companies support the DVD+R format so you'll have more cross-platform compatability.
I was going to buy one, but then I realized I could buy a 200 gig drive for the same price as a DVD burner, and 160GB drives are cheaper per byte than blank DVD media thus negating my reason for buying a DVD burner. |

Tons of both + and _ available all over the Yongsan electronics market. Lots of it out for sale on the sidewalks. |

Proof's in the pudding. There is a higher rejection/filure rate across the board for DVD-R media on DVD players.
Ironically, the best DVD-R and +R playback I've ever witnessed would be on PS2s. They rule.
Gord's needs are different than mine, as I produce video (my own) for distribtuion. I can't hand out hard drives.
To correct Gord - Taiwan was more DVD+R than -R. -R was easy to find, however most burners were favoring +R.
When I lived in Taiwan's "Sillicon Valley," Hsinchu, I was teaching engineers who forked in the medium. I was universally encouraged to go with DVD+R. Having traveled around Asia and the last time I was in the states (early December), DVD+R was the standard, and easy to find. The majority of set-top DVD records used the medium, and DVD-R was pretty much the BETA to +R's VHS like role.
ONLY in SKorea have I noticed the (jingoistic?) disregard for the media and it has been impossible for me to find ANY discs. That's why Iwas hopeing someone coudl give me the name of a place - some pale - anywhere on the penninsula - that sells the media.
This is still an important question for me, but I will also ask, what is the price for DVD-R external burners (I use a laptop) in this DVD-recordable backwards nation?

The point being I already have a file server set up and a computer jacked into the TV. So if I want to watch a movie or TV show, I can have everything in one spot. No flipping though discs and no wasting time burning so it's faster to get the job done, and cheaper to boot.
Plus my Internet connection here serves up 5MB a second. I don't even have to be in the apartment to watch something. If I'm at a friend's house and we say "let's watch XYZ", I can just hop on the computer and we can view the movie streamed off my file server.
I just posted what I had done, not what everyone else should do. |

Well its all about what you use it for.
I have been using my burner for just burning stuff off the Hard Drive. TV series, movies.. ETC.
Whatever standard doesnt seem to worry me because they store 4.7 gig which kicks ass over 700 mb CDR.
If I find DVD-R I buy DVD-R. If I see DVD+R I buy DVD+R. They both hold the same amount of data.
If I got into DVD authoring for when I buy my camcorder. Maybe then I will care more. But I got a cheap burner for 140k. |

Yongsan has them just make sure you as for +.
When I went I bought the - and I think they suck. My dvdplayer doesnt read the discs. Neither does a lot of the dvd players in the computers at my work. My laptop has a +/- burner so I can use both.
They are more expensive...reason I went with - but I need to buy some + |
