The BBC today asked users of its news website "Should homosexuals face execution?" on a talkboard discussion for a World Service programme for African listeners.
Posted on a BBC News premoderated talkboard, the thread was designed to provoke discussion ahead of the latest edition of interactive World Service programme Africa Have Your Say.
"Yes, we accept it is a stark and disturbing question, but this is the reality behind an anti-homosexuality bill being debated on Friday by the Ugandan parliament which would see some homosexual offences punishable by death," the post said.

Geez. If gays want to be gay, then let them have at it. No need to go executing anyone. |

It's one reason why we should be trying to help them out of poverty. |

Helping them out of poverty and giving them money are two different things, though, wouldn't you say? |

Remember the African aid thread? There is plenty of evidence in there that there is really no such thing as "helping them out of poverty". The West has been pumping money into the African continent for 20 years and now they are worse off than they were 20 years ago! |

Go over to Rachel Maddow and watch her coverage of it over the last two weeks--she points out how The Family (the conservative Christian group) has played a role in getting the bill introduced (they've since come out against it after all the negative publicity). |

Noooo, Ya-ta Boy! When someone starts a point off by invoking Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity, I shudder. Why have we not developed that same reaction for their polar opposites? Olbermann and Maddow are not exactly "centrist."
There's more balance on Radio North Korea than on Countdown. These people are entertainers. Try not to take them seriously. |

Beck and Hannity are reviled for their behavior, not their political leanings. Olbermann and Maddow may be quite far on the left, but that doesn't make them equivalent to Beck and Hannity.
I think it's extremely telling that conservatives, rather than trying to defend individuals like Beck or Hannity, or organizations like Fox News, instead try to equate individuals or organizations on the Left with them, using the lunatics that define the American Right as ideological kamikazees. I'm sorry, while Maddow and Olbermann certainly are quite far on the Left, they are no where near as disingenuous as Beck or Hannity.
You talk about balance, but balance is totally unrelated to truth. |

Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity and Keith Olbermann and Michael Moore are all screaming entertainers.
But Maddow gives a serious treatment of the issues from a left-ward perspective. She has integrity and is willing to correct her mistakes to correct the record. I enjoy watching her show. |

Aside from the false equivalency argument, there is nothing in thecount's post that addresses the issue. A slew of The Family members have been active in Uganda and the president of Uganda is a member of The Family. (It isn't all about The Family anyway.)
American religious conservatives have been attempting to influence Ugandan politics. The degree of their success may be questioned, but not their attempts. Maddow seems to have had some influence on them finally speaking out against the death penalty. |

Closet gays projecting their confused self-hatred onto the Africans.
That's mighty white of them. |
