| I was just told that I am to be living AT my hagwon. . . im not particularly pleased with this, but it is what it is. Can anything positive result in living at your hagwon? |

| You should tell them then you will need a new job. Would you want to live for a year under the nose of your boss. That is what will happen. |

Positive for your boss as he will always have you on call "Oh can you teach this extra class?"
Not so positive for you.
Refuse. INSIST on separate housing. If your boss is too cheap to pay for housing, what makes you think he can be trusted to pay salary?
Plus you will have no privacy. You don't have to accept this. I certainly hope you didn't sign a contract with this in it. |

Don't do it - take a different JOB!
I knew somebody who was forced to live in a tiny apartment on the top floor of his Hagwon.
The apartment was tiny size - without even a stove or anywhere to cook.
The students soon figured out where he lived and would go up the stairs to do things outside his tiny apartment - including graffiti etc
He had to hang his clothes up to dry outside the apartment - BAD idea.
The Hagwon boss and Korean teachers employed at the apartment controlled his phone and internet connection - looked through any trash he threw out
and watched him always.
He also said it was so embarrasing going grocery shopping and having to walk up the Hagwon stairs with his groceries.
He basically couldn't do anything or go anywhere without everyone knowing what he was doing - and of course they (Korean teachers) would talk about everything he did - behind his back. (and often in front of him in Korean - then laugh about it).
Just take another position. |

It didnt say that I would be living AT the hagwon it just said furnished single peron studio. I thought of course it would be off-site! |

Thank God, i just emailed my recruiter and he told me that I would NOT be living at my hagwon. This is a false alarm, but makes for good conversation nonetheless. . . .
But he ended it with that he never heard of English teachers living at their Hagwons, and he doesnt think this is the case. Please God, let it not be so! |

My last hagwon had a similar setup.
There was a dorm for the NETs and K-teachers
the school was 5 feet away. You could literally trip and fall into it.
Utilities & laundry was fine, no charge. Same with internet.
But the room was so damn small. Bringing company over, everyone knew.
Think about what is most important. For me, its privacy |

NO! this clause was NOT in my contract. . . does it have to be? Or can they do the ole spring it on ya thing once you get there? |

They can try to spring it on you...with lots of fake smiles and nervous laughs...just stand firm and smile right back that you need your privacy. And recruiters are known for saying anything to get people over there...let's hope this one is honest. |
