I have seborrheic dermatitis, and I've always used Selsun Blue back in the states to keep my scalp in check. I have been unable to find a decent equivalent with a decent amount of selenium sulfide in it. Head and Shoulders isn't working and I need something a bit more powerful. Unfortunately, I can't read hangul and I don't know any Korean, so it's difficult for me to find what I need. I've only been here for a little over 2 weeks and my scalp is killing me. Does anyone know of a decent substitute to Selsun Blue that I can find here?

Go into a pharmacy (a large one) and ask for Dan-Gard (contains zinc pyrithione 2%) made in Singapore.

http://www.pharmacymix.com/i/8453M_EN-US_1.jpg

(It is highly recommended by doctors) but it will cost you 10,000won for a 150ml bottle.

Just use it once every 2 days (it is both shampoo and conditioner in one).

Dan-Gard is especially for seborrheic dermatitis. Ingredients - purified water, sodium laureth sulphate, sodium c14-16 olefin sulphonate, stearamide MEA stearate, sodium chloride, disodium cocamido, MIPA-sulphosuccinate, oleamide MIPA, methyl paraben)

Don't get it in your eyes.

Same boat here, but I guess to a lesser extent: Head and Shoulders works fine for me (but when I go home, I do bring back a couple of Blue's)

ANYWAY, selenium sulfide is the same in Korean and English so finding the hangeul on the bottle should be pretty straight forward.

Look for 새리니엄 설파이드 or something to that effect. I'll keep my eyes open next time I go to the store, see if they have something stronger.

Perhaps someone else who is better with Korean can tell you how to ask the proper questions in Korean.

I would say "Selinium sulfide mah-ni chu-se-yo" (suh-lee-nee-eom seoul-pah-ee-deu mah-nee jew-say-oh) which means "selinium sulfide lots please." Do that, then point at a bottle of shampoo and say "selinium sulfide chogum" (jo-geum, means little) and shake your head.

If you use these phrases, point at the bottle, point at your head, make a crying motion while pointing at your head and saying "little" then a big happy face while saying "lots" and they'll probably find a clerk who speaks english to help you out, making you feel like a total idiot for wasting everyone's time with the charades.

Or it will work and they'll figure it out. Wink Either way, good luck buddy!

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm going to try to hit up the local pharmacy and see if I can find that Dan-Gard stuff. If that doesn't work then I guess I'll try my best to pronounce selenium sulfide using my best Korean impression and see where that gets me.

They also have Nizoral here. I have really bad seborrheic dermatitis, so I need to use it every day. the big bottle is 20,000 and lasts me about 2 months. You can get a prescription here for it, and it costs like 7,000. If you're getting a prescription for something else, get him to toss it on.

Pronunciation is like "nee-zo-ral"

The Face Shop makes a Coal Tar based shampoo and conditioner. Its in the Bronze box.

I hate the smell of Coal Tar, but boy it works.

I will the second the Nizoral. You can get 1% or 2% depending on the severity of your case. I use it and it is a lifesaver... Head and Shoulders dries me out, I need the good stuff..

Good luck...

It is the same in Korean, too

I got some dan-gard at the pharmacy by my apartment and I'll see how well it works. I noticed they also had nizoral there right next to the dan-gard so if it doesn't work I suppose I'll opt for that. Thanks again.

I hope this doesn't sound like a put on (if so, google it), but baking soda, followed by vinegar in water (not at the same time!) works really well and is more effective than most dandruff shampoos, and certainly cheaper. You'd mix around a teaspoon or so of baking soda with some hot water, and use that as a shampoo. You can leave it at that, but your hair may be a bit tangled, so a similar amount of vinegar in water (choose the least pungent kind, or use bottled lemon juice if you're worried about smell) works both as a kind of 'conditioner' and is also really good for treating dandruff (and if you have mold problems in your apartment, you can use it for that too..).

These remedies vary in usefulness depending on the specific issue that is causing your dandruff.

Regular dandruff shampoos and any kind of home remedies have done little to benefit me other than annoy me as my scalp grew itchier and itchier as the days passed.

I bought this stuff at Homeplus. It's called CurAir (made by LG). It was 13,000 Won and the package comes with two bottles(a #1 and a #2). After two weeks, I have to say this stuff works great.

yeah, I pour a little bit pure lemon juice to wash my hair...it softens my hair so much and help get rid off the handruff...

not sure it works for everyone though
