I read that GEPIK has a zero tolerance policy on the hire of any person with any criminal record. Speaking with a couple recruiters confirms this.

No it would not. As of four or five months ago, the VSS is not even required by Korean immigration. The critical document is the criminal background check.

Revision of Foreign Language Instructor (E-2) visa issuance requirements

* Required submission of proof of criminal records
(the records must be affixed with the relevant nation�s Apostille or their consulates in Korea)
※ Nationals of countries that have not signed the Apostille treaty, (Canada) must get their records verified by their local Korean consulate, and those already in Korea who were issued their criminal records from their consulates in Korea have no need for an Apostille
(If they have previous criminal records, they cannot be issued a certificate of visa issuance unless otherwise specified)
※ Exceptions are made if the nature of the crime is light and does not affect their ability as a teacher


From other threads discussing how schools will disqualify teachers; reporting them to whatever blacklist, surely immigration officials will consider 20 year old, light, summary convictions grounds to deny the E-2 visa even though it isn't even sex, drug, gun, violence, or any other nasty of the like.

Is this all I have to do?

Send finger print card with the form below.

With cover letter asking for it to be Notarized.

Then send the stamped form to:

Department of State
Division of Corporations
Apostille Certification
P.O. Box 6800
Tallahassee, FL 32314-6800

http://notaries.dos.state.fl.us/notproc7.html

With a cover letter stating that it needs Apostille for employment as an ESL Teacher in South Korea.

Does that sound right?

There is no finger print card for the state of Florida, but that is the correct form/address and the apostille address/process is correct.

Hold the Cart!
Let's get back on topic here folks.
This is not about "how to get your criminal background / record check".
This is about having a criminal record that has nothing to do with teaching.
This is about some of our "errors", "mistakes", or ill deeds of long, long ago.
Some people have a DUI. --> Criminal Record. --> Bad Teacher.
Some people have tax issues. --> Criminal Record. --> Bad Teacher.
( i think i just invited some holier than thous to come in and present a case that these people should lose their privileges including teaching overseas. )
anyway...
So, you have a record. How light is light?
With more people being disqualified from teaching in Korea due to tighter visa regulations (rightfully imposed or not) what is this doing to the ESL teaching field overall in Korea?
Thoughts, discussion, ideas?
