Hi,

I'm teaching the no-cook cooking class, aka Sandwich class.

I'm having difficulty getting excited about sandwich class, although-- it being Middle School and all-- I know the kids love anything to do with food.

I know there's many well experienced PS teachers on here, so lemme know-- do you have any secret fun formulae for "sandwich class"?

And... how on earth can it take 45 minutes? It's not like we can make our own bread.

make sandwiches from the famous people that they might know:
Obama makes a mean tuna (gherkins, mayo, tuna, shredded carrots, & celery). You can find lots of versions on the internet. Make several of each type and cut them in 1/4 and let the kids discuss the differences and vote on the ones that they like.
Make your first sandwich that you made as a kid their age.

I know it's hard to get excited about role-plays, but I would try to get one to make a sandwich and the other to order what they want on it. Each sandwich could be different. They don't have to make the same one.

Also, try the videos on sites like ehow.com . They always have some great instructional videos for even simple things. I used a video for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and it was perfect. Text support too.

Thank you! I like all those ideas (video, celeb. sandwiches, role play)... sounds like it won't be a boring class at all!

Hmm I worked at Subway for a couple of years. Maybe I could even set up a Subway-like sandwich bar and we could have a really good time!

Oh, I also forgot the Mr. Bean makes a sandwich ppt and materials. I've been making lots of neat power points for watching mr. bean and the sandwich one is great! Get it on EFL Classroom or watch on youtube. The ppt has vocabulary and activities if needed. This one really really is hilarious!

This isn't the first post I've read about "making a sandwich" class and so now I'm curious ... is this a must-do in public schools? I've never worked in one so I don't really know the ins and outs of it.

Vegemite and cheese sandwiches. If that won't get them excited about sandwiches, nothing will.

I'm doing this Sandwich thing too. I bought emmental cheese, coz I like it and I couldn't see cheddar. I detest that processed sliced crap. I was cutting it up in slices then I saw green mould at the end. The rest of it should be fine, shouldn't it? It isn't past its gone off date. Eughh
I know cheese is made from mould and it's prob fine to use but it's very off putting and I don't want kids ill.
OK to use?

Our school is also thinking of doing a "cooking day" and was wondering what sandwich do you guys recommend? Each class is 45 minutes long with elementary kids so it would have to be easy to make. Thinking of doing soup and sandwich possibly?? Any suggestions???

Lol about the moldy cheese I would ask on a medical forum, or something, because I really don't know.

As for sandwich ingredients, we're just going with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and -- ketchup (not my idea).

Soup and sandwich sounds delicious, but too complicated... unless if you're going to use ramyeon.

If you have access to an oven at all, I think you could make cupcakes. It would be easy and fun, and each kid could decorate them individually.

If you have access to a stove and a pan, maybe pancakes? That would be simple and tasty.

As far as sandwich class goes, I'm just going to open with that sandwich order computer came, because it will get kids' attention. Then, the kids can pair off and they can make sandwiches for each other.

Then they can eat the sandwiches. Teens like to eat.

That being said, I don't think the class needs that much jazzing up at all There's food. That's pretty jazzy.

I have to agree, vegemite and cheese is the bomb. Toasted is even better. Maybe you could do sandwiches from around the world, the one mentioned being Australian. Could do P&J for USA, and they could vote. Anything that involves a vote can be fun.
