|

Hi,
I am currently in the process of applying for my first ESL job in South Korea.
I am currently only working with one recruiter and advised him that I wish to work at a public school in the Seoul area as I have some dance classes that I will be attending regularly in Seoul.
I was advised it might be hard to find public school work in Seoul because of the current economic situation and that they tend to look for more experienced teachers in Seoul but he will see what he can find.
My question is - Even though I need to be in Seoul regularly, do you think it's worth while branching out into the GEPIK programme and specifying a location as close to Seoul as possible?
Does anyone know where the closest/best places are to work within the GEPIK programme region?
Thanks in advance. |

Just look at a map and stay close to Seoul. I am in Incheon, and it's about an hour from Seoul. If you need to be closer than that, you may need to stay in Seoul. If not, consider Bundang, Seongnam area, Suwon, and Anyang. If you don't mind living in the northern parts, consider Ilsan and Uijeongbu. There is also Guri, and I lived near there, but I found it a bit inconvenient. I made frequent trips south to Pyeongtaek and it ended up being 2 hour trips. So, I try to live south of the Han river. |

Do you know where in Seoul your classes are? Certain suburbs would be better for certain areas of Seoul. Bucheon and Yongin are a couple of others that weren't already mentioned. |

The lessons are in Hongdae - I was ideally looking for a public school job which would make things harder but I guess if I find a good private school with decent hours then location might be easier to accomodate. |

Then Bucheon or Ilsan might be your best bet. The 921 bus goes from Ilsan > Hongdae station and takes an hour (maybe a bit less depending on where in Ilsan you are). I used to live by Madu St and it took 50 mins. Plus there are even quicker express buses that run until the early hours that get you to Sinchon, one station from Hongdae.
Btw, even if you got a job with SMOE, you have no choice of where you are placed....so you could quite easily be placed at the other end of Seoul which can easily take an hour plus to Hongdae too |

Ah ok, thanks a lot for the replies - Maybe I need to rethink some stuff. Ideally I don't want to have to travel an hour.
I'll see what my recruiter comes up with and take it from there.
Cheers again. |
