I've noticed recently that there are a few internet sites that I can't seem to view, neither from home nor from my school nor from various wifi spots. At first I thought it was something with the sites but it seemed strange that so many would be down. Then someone suggested that internet providers are asked or obliged to block sites with certain contents. I asked friends in other countries to see if the sites are working and sure enough they are still up and running. So it's just here. The odd thing is that these are academic pages. There's nothing obscene, political, religious, illegal or even related to Korea. I have no idea why they would be blocked.
Does anyone know who determines which sites are to be blocked? And is there some way that I can request a site to be unblocked? |

A lot of websites are blocked, it's just a matter of running into them.
The funny thing is that there is no specific reason for blocking some over others. For instance, high traffic porn sites seem to be fine, but a lot of smaller sites are not (youporn.com, redtube.com both work fine). Fulltiltpoker.com is blocked, but pokerstars.com is not...go figure. |

I have tried from various locations to visit this site.
Does this mean that someone specifically blocked THIS site?
Is there a way to get sites unblocked? I think that if the people who block sites looked at some of these sites, in most cases they'd see in less than a minute that there is no dodgy material on the sites.
If someone knows how to get sites unblocked, please let me know.

When I tried it, it just timed out, which leads me to believe that subdomain is down. If a site is blocked here in Korea, you get the governmental warning page AFAIK.

They could be using oldschool RIP V1, which would probably put them a few hops too many away.
Try a proxy sometime. |

The site isn't down. I asked some people in other countries to verify that it's still working.
There is also a tracking image on the site. From the tracking site, I can see that people are still opening the site's homepage.

Yes. It's timing out for me too.
It usually does the same if I try to open it from the Google cache of the home page. (Although sometimes I've waited long enough and it actually opened.) Anything cached by Google, should be coming up in a flash.
Is it possible that internet providers are running some kind of filter for specific words? I remember when I used to go to Starbucks in North America and they would block any webpage that had the word "sex" in it. Unfortunately they blocked ALL pages with it, including the page for the bus terminal because they had a notice that they are an equal opportunity employer and don't descriminate based on race, ethnicity, religion, or..... sex. Is it possible that internet providers would do the same?

As I said before, it's probably RIP V1 running on some old routers.
Use a proxy, or find a way to skip a few hops to the router nearest to the host.
Another solution is to use different DNS servers. |
