| in the movie "24 hour party people" the sex pistols play a show in manchester and there are only about 15 people in the audience. however, those people included members of joy division, the buzzcocks, the red haired guy from simply red, and a few other notable people. it's kind of like the story of the first velvet underground record; only 500 people bought the album, but they all started famous bands. anyway, that would have been a cool show. but, i really wish i was at mode's 101 show at the rose bowl in 1989. |

I stretched the truth a little, I grew up about 8 miles north in Whitmore Lake, but from the time I could drive until I moved to Seattle at 28 I spent nearly everyday there, working in town for 9 years and living there the last 5.
Loved me some Hippie Hash after a late night out. Never saw any major shows at the Pig, usually just friends. Sad to see my old employer, Liberty Street Video, closed shop. A lot of the town's old character is fast disappearing, though I heard the same from the old hippies in the nineties too.
I'd have loved to have been at this show too:
"In January of 1966 Warhol shot a film of the new lineup entitled The Velvet Underground and Nico: A Symphony of Sound. Police broke up the shooting because of complaints about noise, but the film prevailed, later providing a backdrop for Velvets live shows. Warhol wanted to project movies onto the members of the band as they played and surround them with light shows and dancers. The first such multi-media event took place at the Cinematheque; it became known as �Andy Warhol, UpTight,� and soon went on the road. After a shaky start, the show hit its stride at the University of Michigan Film Festival in Ann Arbor. �Ann Arbor went crazy,� Warhol said in Up-Tight."
It was either this show or the Exploding Plastic Inevitable that Iggy Pop was at that inspired him to form a band. I think Black Flag and The Misfits each played a show or two at the Nectarine back in the day too. Would have liked to have been there for that. God bless Ann Arbor! You've got me all nostalgic.  |

Whitmore? Know any of the Kapp clan? I grew up on Joy Rd. off of Whitmore Lk Rd. right next to US-23 and Northfield Church Rd. and Nollar Rd.
My folks would take me as a kid up to the Whitmore Lake Tavern and occasionally hit up the Polly Mart there.
As for the Ace Deuce, yeah a lot of staples are closing down. Fiegel's The Old German, Tio's, Schoolkids Records, Ryder's Hobby Shop, Lucky Drugstore, and a couple other places I can't think of have all died. Oh and Pinball Pete's on South U. caught fire and burned up. Naked Mile is pretty much dead. Hash Bash is still going strong, though it has changed more into a "Freedom Fighter" kinda thing rather than everyone just going out and blazing on the Diag. Crime is up big too. Rapes, B&Es, Stick-Ups, kinda sad. Ann Arbor used to be a place you could leave your door unlocked.
I can think of about 20 shows that were in A2 which I wanted to see but was too broke/working to go see. Numerous concerts at the Ark/Pig/Michigan.
The only shows I got to see were Black Metal bands at the Pig that played on off-nights.
Seeing Fahrenheit 9/11's Midwest premiere at the Michigan was pretty cool. Lila Lipscomb gave a 10 minute speech before the movie played. The energy in the theater was crazy. |
