When I went to pick up my deposits (about 700,000 won) 6 months ago or so, my old employer informed me that I owe them about 220,000won. I know this is BS because my bills weren't that much, and they charged me 100,000 won to clean my apartment, which was beyond filthy when I first got into it... finger and toenail clippings on the floor, pubes everywhere.

They just sent me a message saying this:

Hi X. As you know you owed 215,870won to X, but you never send it to our bank. Please wiretransfer it by this weekend. We don't want you to be in trouble with money matters."

Is there any real recourse here? I don't believe I owe them this money. What kind of 'trouble with money matters' can I get into? I did not sign anything saying that I owe them money when I went to pick up my deposits, which they royally screwed me over for.

This message was sent to my friend, whom I used as my emergency contact. They don't have my new number, and don't know where I am right now.

You no longer work there, so it's no longer your problem.

Tell them to send you a detailed discription and a receipt. I bet you never hear from them again. If they do send it say "no, it wasn't me" then ignore them

Agreed. Make them PROVE you owe money.

Laughing

I wouldn't even bother responding to something like that.

There's no good reason for them to know your current location or phone #. Wink

The problem is that my ex was the one who got the message and forwarded it to me.

Both my boss and my ex are psycho vengeful hellcats. I'm afraid my old boss will bother my ex, and my ex will give my old boss my number and info.

I won't do anything until I hear from them again. They deserve to lose more than 200,000won for the crap they put me through. They fired me without notice and took all my deposit money, and then told me I still owe them money. F that.

I just don't want to be harassed. This ex boss is really insane. We wrestled on my last pay. She tried to take it out of my hand when I mentioned legal action against the school for firing me without just cause. After that they produced some trumped-up reason for firing me.

They aren't going to sue you for 200,000. However, don't do what others might suggest and be a deadbeat. As the man says, if they can send you paid receipts showing that you owe the money, you should do the right thing and pay it. If they can't do that (which is something they would have to do in court anyway to prove damages), then you have nothing to worry about.

why invite a problem? Tell them you want some form of evidence that you owe them this cash. perhaps a reciept/documentaion. Make them prove it. Tell them you'd be happy to pay it provided they can prove it. If they can't-which seems that won't be able to- you're in the clear.

My ex told them that she doesn't talk to me anymore, which is pretty much true (finally).

If she contacts me herself, I will request a receipt of some kind. 200,000 isn't a ton of money, but I'd much rather spend that on something else, like my student loan.

If she replies with a receipt, I guess I'll pay it. It just kills me to give money to such a vengeful and disgraceful person and school.

Is there any way this could come back to bite me? I leave Korea in 2 months, but plan to come back (maybe) around the end of summer. Can she report me or something like that?

Sorry for the ignorance. She's just a pretty intimidating person.

Dude, they screwed you six ways to Sunday and yet you are still even letting this "you owe us money" thing enter your mind? C'mon, man...would you have put up with something similar in your home country? No. Then why put up with it here. FYI, I had a similar situation. I had been gone from my school for a few months when they said that I owed utilities. They threatened and threatened, but it did no good. No way I was going to pay. Nothing ever happened. I just didn't pay them. You should know that many hagwon owners are all bluster. All talk and no action.

CLASSIC Korean usage of the phrase "as you know."

If I were you, I'd just ignore it--unless "be in trouble with money matters" means Fat Tony taking a baseball bat to your kneecaps, lol. They're not going to sue you for 215,870 won. Just ignore it.

Congratulations on breaking up with that girl, by the way. She sounded like a total b.

Thanks man. It hasn't been easy. She told me that if I don't get a tattoo of her name on my body, she will break up with me. I told her to hit the road.

Anyway, I will wait and see my old employer's next move. She doesn't really have much she can do. I figure if she were serious, she would dig up my email address and get to me that way. This is just one more thing I don't want to have to worry about. I'm outta here in 2 months.

WHAT?!? For some reason, I'm reminded of the crazy-shower-head-girl from 40-Year Old Virgin. I'm glad you finally split, sounded like it wasn't healthy for either of you from that one thread.

Anyway, I think people have already solved this for you. Good luck!

Unless you actually do own them the money, ignore them.

Play the game...tell them you want to see receipts. Simple enough. And if you owe, don't be an azz like the majority of hogwon owners and stick them. Bow out gracefully! You might need them someday!
