And how they decided the slavery trade was bad before some other countries did (but the colonization and enslavement of entire populations was okay!)

You obviously don't understand the difference between slavery and colonialism.

Amen. My grandparents and family lived under the British Raj and I'm grateful that they did, rather than under some Indian-ruled slave society. They were also able to become commonwealth citizens.

I'm also glad, that the country where I live today was colonised by Britain and made into a free country rather than being a barbaric society of a bunch of wandering primitive nomads who hadn't even invented the wheel, lived in fear of cold and disease, and had no system of education, writing, business, frequently warred with and enslaved other tribes, and were all slaves to a tribal chieftain. Thanks to Britain, people in my area of Canada see a medical doctor rather than a shaman. There are buildings here and roads, rather than caves and trails.

Add this post to the list of things people will consider crazy Western pride by the way. I'm sure more than a few people will take offence to the idea that the primitive peoples didn't live in peaceful harmony with nature and themselves.

The examples of pride that I see living in Canada are what I would call the Canadian myths. These are stories that Canadians tell themselves to make themselves feel better. They are essentially big fat lies. Here's a couple: Canadians are really environmentally friendly people, we are good global citizens, our health care system is really good.

Nope, I understand it just fine. Just because you colonize a place doesn't mean you can't enslave and massacre a population. If that is the case, then I would appreciate all others from refraining from comments about the untimely deaths of American Indians and Australian Aborigines, after all, it was just "colonization".

Hold on, this was your original statement,

And how they decided the slavery trade was bad before some other countries did (but the colonization and enslavement of entire populations was okay!)

Yes, the UK did outlaw the slave trade before most other nations, and after this time, slavery was largely abolished in the British empire. Yes, before that Britain, and other European nations had done some pretty brutal things through their colonial empires, yet Britain, under domestic pressure of public opinion, did outlaw slavery and then used the British navy to enforce this ban. Just because you recognise the historical significance of the abolitionist movement in the UK, does not mean you are making excuses for all the wrongdoings done in the name of colonialism.

I must have missed that manual also!!

I was certainly never taught to hate the british by any of my history teachers, and also never understood my history lessons to be anti british, just history! I also dont know anyone else who studied history to have these feeling.
