Canada's second-oldest magazine, The Beaver, is changing its name because its unintended sexual connotation has caused the history journal to become snagged in Internet filters and has turned off potential readers. |
Is nothing sacred?
And this:
| Quote: |
| "Market research showed us that younger Canadians and women were very very unlikely to ever buy a magazine called The Beaver no matter what it's about," said Reid, adding he has mixed feelings about the name change. "For whatever reasons, they are turned off by the name." |
Too funny. |

I remember taking history classes in Canada in the 80s and my professor talking about Beaver. Great guy, but he never once seemed to pick up on the snickers. What makes it funnier is that it is such a sober historical journal.
I wonder what took so long for them to give in and change the name. Maybe the same kind of pride that keeps Dildo, Newfoundland from taking a new town name! |

| I thought this thread was about new Canadian decency laws as related to pornography. I understand the name change. Will this open up the trademark for a new The Beaver mag? |

I wouldn't be surprised if there are already ten magazines with such a name.
I've heard complaints from professors back home that they were published in The Beaver and then had to leave the publication off their CV if they sent it online -- swear filters sometimes blocked the CVs! |
