|

[Edit]
I had a background check done by my local Sheriff's department and it states I have a clean record. I've seen on several recruiting sites that going to your local police station to obtain the CBC is acceptable and also faster than from the FBI. Has anyone used a CBC obtained from a local police dept. and had it accepted?
I do not need it to apply for my visa [I am F-4], however I think that the education board requires that I submit a CBC to teach.

Why don't you just do an online criminal records check (like apartment landlords do on their new tenants sometimes) on yourself and see what the check says. If it's clean, you're good. If it says anything other than "no criminal records found" then you probably have a problem.
If you go http://www.erentalservicesinc.com/buyit2.html and scroll down, you can see that it can send you a background check in a day or two for abour $40. Try that. |

well, one way to find out would be to order the criminal background check and find out. It's possible that if the charges were dropped it won't show up, and then you won't have to worry about it anymore!
However, if it does, its probably something you should be aware of now, rather than it cropping up its head later in the application process of this, OR any other job you might apply for ....
As to whether it will affect your chances, I don't know... I'm not really very knowledgeable about that part of the process, as I have yet to go through it myself.
Good luck! |

Thanks for the suggestion. I realize I have another question. Is the background check to obtain the E-2 visa or for the school itself? According to the Korean consulate website it seems like it is to obtain the E-2 visa, which i am not getting because I am getting the F-4 [gyopo visa]. If that's the case, then I would have nothing to worry about anyways. |

hmmm, I'm not sure about that one. You don't need the check for the visa, that's true, but this thread: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=172818 from December seems to suggest that you will need it anyways, since you are working in the public schools. Maybe one of the folks that posted there could give you more info! |

It depends where you live, and where the arrest took place. In California (and probably other states), any contact with the police will show up on the CBC. It doesn't matter that the case was dismissed. How Korean immigration interprets this is above my paygrade. Probably not favorably. |

I suggest adding "Gyopo" to your subject line, it will get them to click on the link more and you can get a better more knowledgeable response. |

Get a public AND a federal check in case one is clear and the other isn't.
I have a bunch of small charges from years ago, but not a single one came up on either check. |

If the charges were dropped then it should be clean, if it isnt then you can get it fixed quickly. There are processes to get things removed form the background check even if you were convicted. No idea how long it takes, as I havent been caught doing anything stupid by anyone other than my friends.
I would guess it depends on the job and employer.
If they just want a warm wagon butt to fill a seat than anything other than "No records found" will delete your application.
If they want you I am willing to bet they wont care about anything in the misdemeanor category.
If it is a big company or school organization then they are most likely looking for specific things and anything else will be glanced over.
Good luck in finding a good school, do lots of reasearch on your place of employment, it pays off 10 fold. |

THanks guys! I went to my local police station and got my cbc done and they marked it as "no record found." I assume since it has the stamp, signature, and is done by my sheriff's dept. it will suffice for a cbc. Now to get it apostled...haha |

Local will not suffice. It must be state or FBI. |

I was told by the public school recruiter for GEPIK that I can go to my local police department and have them run a name or name&fingerprint background check on me. The results they gave me say
"A name only search of the criminal history records of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has been conducted on the following individual, revealing the following results."
Then it states I have no record.
I asked a hakwon teacher friend of mine and she thought it would be fine, but she's only been working there for a year, so you might know better than she. |

This past June I was able to get a C4 visa using only a local check, but I was told in July that I needed a state check to get my E2. It may be different since you have hangook-in pi in your veins, but if I were you I would demand (asking won't work) that they call and verify everything with immigration.
Maybe calling the consulate will help as well.

CRC is for a public school job if you have an F-4 Visa.
If you get flagged, just get a job at a hagwon. |

I got my F4 visa last month and did not need a criminal background check. However to get hired for a position, I was told you MUST have at least a state level background check. I was able to get mine from the State Bureau of Investigation (NC) and then get it apostilled by the Secretary of State. |
